When you plan to do a DIY condo or home painting, bear in mind the 60-30-10 rule of designers. Usually they choose a 3-color palette for a room makeover to create a balanced look. Then you can achieve a cohesive look without being too matchy-matchy: 60% comes from the dominant wall color and big furniture pieces, 30% can be from accent furniture pieces, lighting or soft furnishings, 10% are home accessories, textiles, patterns, or textures. There’s no hard and fast rule with the numbers. Remember that this is just a guideline so don’t be too strict with yourself! Just remember that the 60% is the main color that you want to build your palette from, so you better make sure that this is a color you love! Color Family Above are tools you can use in your choice of colors. You can buy a color wheel like the one in…

If you’re the crafty type, do a Carlo move and make your own wooden coasters. After making a geometric wall in his Mom’s neighborhood fruit and shake bar, Carlo sawed wooden hexagon pieces and made them into coasters. Painting them with bright hues could bring you joy every time you use them. Just like Mama, who now has cheerful looking wooden coasters to use when serving her delicious fruit shakes to customers, most of them already her sukis. Making your own things instead of buying them gives a feeling of accomplishment. There are some people who go as far as making their own Christmas gifts to give to loved ones. I admire those people because you know they spent a lot of time making something for you, when it would have been easier to go to a store and buy the gifts. Even handwritten letters are such a rarity these days.…

Look at how Max and Cody love each other. Dogs in Your Life and Home We made this post for our doggie friends and their humans. There’s this segment in the book by John Grogan about his dog Marley where he talks about the precious companionship of a dog, “A person can learn a lot from a dog, even a loopy one like ours. Marley taught me about living each day with unbridled exuberance and joy, about seizing the moment and following your heart. He taught me to appreciate the simple things-a walk in the woods, a fresh snowfall, a nap in a shaft of winter sunlight. And as he grew…

In a past life while living in Europe, DIY condo painting was something I did for a previous home. It was a challenge because I had never done it before and because the condo was about 100 sqm, with a height of 3 meters (or almost 10 feet), and had seven huge windows. You’d think that having windows would cut down the square meter area of the surface which you need to paint. That’s right, of course. But preparing the surface becomes harder. You need to paint with a brush around the windows so that painting the walls with a roller would be “easier” to do after. Having such a high ceiling was great, but to me painting that kind of space while being half the height of the ceiling was a handicap. Climbing up and down a 2-meter ladder almost did me in. After the first day, I could…

How much did the DIY work cost? That’s something that concerns homeowners. With all the expenses we’re faced with everyday, most of us do not even consider refurbishing our homes. It’s not only money but also time. Work, traffic, school, home, social life – all these add up and eat into the hours we have. Money-wise, total cost of Danica’s DIY works was less than P6,000. You can go lower, of course, if you are not as   diva-ish as her with wanting an ombre wall. You can keep your wall to one color, and the same goes for your furniture. But then what is P6,000 really when this investment can give you something so much more than the peso cost? You get fulfillment and that priceless feeling of being home in a new city. So go and mosey on down to your friendly Boysen Mix and Match Station after using…

Hellbent on painting her nest with colors that bring her joy and energy, Danica opts for an ombre look and paints one accent wall with different blues to remind her of the Cebu beaches. After a successful visit to a Boysen Mix and Match Station, she prepares the wall and the area around it, then rolls on three shades of blue, blending it to get the effect she wants to achieve. The post Personalized Walls from Boysen shows you different ways to make different effects for your walls. You’ll also see an ombre wall, where sponges were used instead of rollers.
