3 Colors that Get a Thumbs Down by the Public

Choosing colors is a personal decision. What is attractive for one may be anathema to another. When you share a home, find colors that are acceptable to everyone especially for common areas like the living room, kitchen, and dining area, unless you’ve got an autocracy going and the parents’ choice reigns.

There are colors though that just bring out the eek reaction in most people. There are many and they are usually these muddy colors, washed out ones, or shrieking neons that are so bright that you get blinded by them. No worries though because Boysen has literally thousands of colors that you can choose from. Just veer towards the restful neutrals, jewel colors, or pretty pastels that would make you feel joyful to see every day.

In 2012, this “drab dark brown” has been voted as the “ugliest color in the world” in Australia. The Australian government commissioned a survey to find out the least attractive color to be used as packaging for tobacco and cigarettes, in the hopes that this ugly color would turn off consumers so much that they would be dissuaded from smoking. Has it been successful in its mission?

According to this article, Australia has seen a drop in its sales of cigarettes.

Cough Syrup Orange

I remember a cough syrup that had this super artificial orange color that seemed toxic to drink. It’s taste also tried to resemble orange but it failed miserably.

There’s a reason why orange cones, life vests, road works, warning and danger signs, etc., are orange. This color stands out, just like red. In interiors, it can be overstimulating and overbearing. If you want a happy color, dial it down.

Puke Green

Vomit can be green but not this kind of green. This neon green is just so bright that having a room painted in this color can make you feel sick, after giving you serious vertigo. Just imagine coming home from work and this color greets you! Home should be a place that brings your stress levels down. In fact, designers go as far as saying to avoid neon altogether when selecting paint colors for your home.

There are many beautiful greens that you can choose from. Read Trend 2021: Moodier Color Palettes for Kitchens and check out the grayish green color that is so in. Other beautiful green colors can be found in The Best Version of Hue: Green.

Do Ugly Colors Exist?

Some designers believe that there are no such thing as ugly colors. You just need to find the right color partner for it to make it more interesting. They say it is all about creating a balance when choosing a color pairing. Read this post on basic color schemes to help you find good color combinations. Or if you’re hellbent on using a bright and intense color like the orange or green above, use it sparingly in small accessories to provide the room with interest.

I say just don’t bother with colors that you find unattractive. It’s not as if there’s a dearth of paint colors. When in doubt about your color pairings, visit the Boysen Color Trend website and explore the color palettes which have been curated by experts.
