Drywall is a construction material that is used to build ceilings, room dividers, and walls. Builders prefer using drywall panels for its many benefits, including being resistant to fire, moisture damage, and termites. You could spot drywall panels in a lot of modern Filipino homes, offices, and other buildings today.

Despite its prevalence, some people still don’t know how to properly paint it. One common misconception that people have about painting drywall surfaces is that they confuse drywall with plywood, so they just assume they could coat it with wood paint. However, drywall surfaces are not made from wood. Choosing the right paint for drywall surfaces can be tricky. That’s why we sat down with Boysen paint experts to list down everything you need to know before painting drywall surfaces. This serves as an added guide for DIY painters or novice painters out there.

How to Prepare Drywall Surfaces for (Re) Painting

For new drywall surfaces, you have to reach out to a construction professional so they could install the drywall panels for you. Drywall manufacturers often recommend a paint type and installation process for a specific type of board depending on whether it’s for interior or exterior use. Pros can help you set up drywall panels properly. They can also effectively hide joints and prevent cracks on the surface. These are the things that you have to consider in the preparation process before proceeding with the actual painting. You can attempt to cover minor imperfections or cracks by following the proper paint system but the paint can only do so much.

Checklist for Surface preparation on drywalls

When it’s been successfully prepped and the joints have been secured, sand the surface lightly to get a smooth finish and to help the paint to adhere better on the surface. Wipe the surface with a clean rag to remove dust particles.

On the other hand, if you’re repainting your wall or ceiling made from drywall. Check the condition of the surface first. Sometimes the damage is so severe that instead of repainting, you need to replace them. If it’s still in good condition, clean the drywall surfaces using a clean damp rag. Scrape off all the loose, scaling, peeling, or flaking paint. After that, lightly sand the surface to ensure an even finish.  Then, wipe off sanding dust particles before applying the primer on bare surfaces.
