If you are thinking about renovating your home, buying one, building one, or even if you are  in the early stages of daydreaming about your ideal home, mood boards are a good tool to get you going with all those ideas, wishes, nice-to-have and need-to-have things in your mind. I invite you to check out the mood boards in the Boysen Pinterest page.

Why Mood Boards

A mood board is a visual representation of all the ideas you have for your interiors and exteriors—paint colors, materials to be used, textures, home accessories like lights, cushions curtains, decor, wall art, furniture, layout, architectural or interior design style…

In the Boysen Pinterest page, the mood boards are primarily a guide to colors. Usually we put a color palette, three to six paint colors with the paint names and codes. The choice is carefully curated, just like our Boysen Color Trend line, usually four palettes per year, with six paint colors for each palette. Aside from color palettes, there are home accessories, furniture, or materials that indicate the interior design style. If you want to know more about any of the mood boards you find in our Pinterest page, just read the description and that should give a link to the pertinent blog post.

What Mood Boards Show

First, it will help you choose your colors. Go for a color that may be a favorite, unless it’s super dark and you know you’re really not Batman. If you have problems choosing your colors, take all the time you need to go over colors in your mind. A good tip would be to ask yourself what your favorite color is for clothes. Do a lot of surfing. It may also help that you know the basics of color theory.

Second, there’s look and feel. At a glance, you will be able to make a split-second decision if the vibe of a mood board would be something you like. We all have different tastes, so an informal and colorful energy like the beach home mood board above may not be what you want.

Maybe you want something more industrial and edgy where materiality is important.

You can browse in the Boysen Pinterest page and you may find something more contemporary, in terms of color and materials. Mood boards give the broad strokes, which is the third thing that a mood board delivers—an indication of the interior design style. Color choices are important but so do materials. It may not be outrightly expressed but with the colors and materials, you will already have an inkling whether the style is industrial, or vintage romantic, or coastal, or Scandinavian, and so on.

This will lead you to the fourth thing that a mood board gives and that is a way forward on how to decorate a space. It will provide you with enough clues to choose the kind of furniture and home accessories you want, as well as most of the interior design elements to make your living space look cohesive as well as unique to you.

Mood Boards Help You Arrive at Your Own Unique Style

Making mood boards is a fantastic way to create your own space that is distinctly you. You are given a tool to come up with a home that fits you to a T, both in taste and lifestyle.

Avoid slavishly copying something you see online when you make your home. For example, you see Scandi and it appeals to you so much that you gotta have it! So, you find out where you will buy that furniture, those mason jars, that potted plant, and so on and so forth. Budget may be limiting you to get exactly the same things so you become creative about it and buy things that look similar. Soon, you will have everything and you copy exactly where the things go. Next thing you know, you and your family of six growing kids will have a pristine white Scandi-looking home that cannot withstand the wear and tear of a growing family.

So even if mood boards will help you arrive at your own unique style, making one is not the first thing to do when you are designing your living space. The first step in creating your dream home is to know yourself and how you live.
