The worlds of fashion and interior design influence each other. Let’s look at some of the fashion trends that will come out in spring/summer 2022 and see how these could influence interior design, especially as regards colors.
Spring/summer 2022 collections presented by designers in New York, London, Milan, and Paris show many different trends from classic black and white to intense colors such as red, green, blue, orange, and yellow. The almost 2-year pandemic has unleashed multi-directional fashion styles from gowns with luxe shine to clothes using heavy-duty motorcycle leather. Cutouts are getting more daring; cropped tops show off well-toned abs; thigh-high slits reveal a lot of skin. But if these holes and slits are not enough, some fashion designers are going for transparent, gauzy materials that leave nothing to the imagination. As to shapes, there are those that worship the female form but also those that are deconstructed and hide or reshape the female form. From bustles to fringes to color clashes to a mix of fabrics, there is an explosion of fashion ideas.
Here’s my attempt to show how some of these fashion trends could work in Filipino home interiors.
Classic Black and White Updated
Fashion: Graphic black and white stripes and polka dots are given a makeover. The use of this classic color combination becomes playful and bold in the hands of designers such as Jil Sander, Schiaparelli, Comme des Garçons, Balenciaga, Carolina Herrera, Tory Burch, Marni, and Missoni. Bright colors like kelly green or yellow are added in a whimsical way. The effect is far from minimalist.
Interior Design: Paint your walls white and take it from there. The black console table, floor lamp, and frame are the black elements which are sparingly added. Choose a colorful sofa like this yellow one and a graphic print on the wall to lift the minimalist look to something more playful. Want something even more head turning? Try putting vertical black stripes on the wall.
Psychedelic Retro
Fashion: Psychedelic and ultra-colored prints of Gabriela Hearst, Givenchy, Isabel Marant, and Paco Rabanne are like blasts from the pasts, channeling a retro vibe, but giving things a contemporary look with interesting shapes, proportions, and weaving techniques.
Interior Design: This brings to mind Verner Panton’s iconic design style, which in the 60s was considered avant-garde and futuristic. This style is far from minimalist with its explosion of vibrant hues and curvy shapes. If you like this look, now is the time to experiment because curvy shapes are back! Comfy Interiors
Fashion: The term athleisure wear came out in 2015. It’s a hybrid fashion style that made gym clothes acceptable to be worn as street wear. Fashion designers like Tod’s, Loewe, Prabal Gurung, Ulla Johnson, Stella McCartney, and Rick Owens are just some of the labels that upgraded this look from comfortable to comfortable AND chic.
Interior Design: Easy and comfortable is still the way to go also for home interiors since these have to double as work from home spaces. Despite businesses slowly opening up, working from home is still very much practiced in many industries.
The Purity of White
Fashion: White, lace, flounces are found in the designs of Givenchy, McQueen, and Vuitton, to name a few. Channeling bride vibes is part of the catwalk for this season.
Interior Design: Talking about bride vibes, the all-time favorite Boysen paint is called Tulle White. This color has been around for a long time now and still going strong! Chances are your home may even be sporting this color. Read about the trend #teamputi by clicking on this link.
Bare-Faced Boudoir
Fashion: Cutouts, cropped tops, sheer fabric, thong pants—all these could be seen from different designers like Prabal Gurung, David Kroma, Christian Siriano, Saint Laurent… Abs are being bared and butt fashion is back! These are the domain of the young or sexy or voluptuous or buffed…or those who embrace the sensual and sensuous in their lives.
Interior Design: I don’t have actually any particular interior design style for this. It’s not so much the look but the feel of the interior space. I would say though that my take on this kind of fashion would be ultrasensual interiors where textures like velvet or silk, and materials like marble, metal, or glass are being used. As regards colors, I can imagine dark, lush colors similar to the ENCHANT palette of Boysen Color Trend 2019.
