It is going on eight years now that grey has been a color of choice for so many interior designers and homeowners around the world. But is grey still a popular color for interiors today? We think so. Judging from the response we get from our social media feeds, grey is still very much the darling especially for the hip, trendy millennials.

Here are Boysen’s latest greys from Color Trends 2017 and 2018:

The Color Psychology of Grey

When asked whether “grey interiors have become popular as a response to the difficult economic situation we are experiencing at the moment,” UK’s leading Applied Color Psychology expert Karen Haller had this to say.

That can absolutely be a reason why. We are protecting ourselves, we may be fearful of the unknown and what is going to happen. We may be subconsciously withdrawing and using grey as a means of protection to feel safe and secure.

Well, seeing where we are at the moment, this seems to be just as relevant today as it was in 2011 when she was interviewed.

The Industrial Interior Style

At about the same time that grey became a trending color for interiors, the rise in the popularity of the industrial interior style also took place. Mainly found in urban settings in the late 2000s, this trend began when industrial buildings like warehouses and factories were converted into homes. Cement floors, exposed brick, concrete, beams, even pipes or ducts, stainless steel accents – these are de rigueur for this style.
