“It is the same with people as it is with riding a bike. Only when moving can one comfortably maintain one’s balance.” That’s a translation of Einstein’s quote in a letter to his son Eduard that I saw two decades ago. I go back to it every time I’m in a funk. I have used it to bolster myself when I feel that the path ahead is not clear, or when I feel indecisive about the next step. Life has taught me that one of the worse things that I could do is stagnate—being inactive, being dull, being too scared to move.

The pandemic has caused an inertia in many of us. Life, as we knew it, had slowed down to the point that left many of us feeling we were (or maybe still are) in the doldrums. Procrastination—delaying or putting off tasks until the last minute or even past the deadline, or what we call the mañana habit—became a hot topic two years ago. Psychologists say that overthinking and ruminating, instead of tackling the issue head on, may lead to depression. Another term that has gained traction during the pandemic is languishing. Adam Grant wrote an article in the New York Times, “Languishing is a sense of stagnation and emptiness. It feels as if you’re muddling through your days, looking at your life through a foggy windshield. And it might be the dominant emotion of 2021.”

Today, the external world is moving at a faster pace compared to that in 2020 and 2021. Many of us may feel the need to make adjustments inside ourselves to be able to manage the energy in our external environment. What to do?

MOVE! You can start slow then shift to a higher gear when you’ve warmed up. Or you can also embrace slow living if that’s what you feel is healthier for you.

MOVE Color Palette in Color Trend 2022/23

How can we say this in colors?

The MOVE color palette is a mix of cool and warm colors, which creates a balanced color scheme. The warm colors—yellow, orange, and purple—are intense. These are matched with the cool colors of blue, gray, and white.

MOVE = Water

For those who haven’t done it yet, now is the time to move away from the “safe harbor” that may have coddled us through the pandemic. If you don’t know how to take that first step, just fake it till you make it. If you can’t hit the ground running, start slow. If you are something like the Koenigsegg Agera, the world’s fastest production car that can move from 0 to 100 kph in 1.9 seconds, good for you. Just don’t spin out of control.

The world is changing fast, even if sometimes it seems the same. How do we survive? Let’s look at Darwin for that. According to the paraphrase by Leon Megginson, “It is not the most intellectual of the species that survives; it is not the strongest that survives; but the species that survives is the one that is able best to adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself.”

When we were creating Color Trend 2022/23, we boldly gave it the theme FLOURISH. Under this umbrella concept, the four color palettes are BREATHE (air), MOVE (water), BLOOM (earth), and LIVE (fire).

The MOVE color palette is symbolized by water. These times call for us to be flexible and adaptable, just like water that flows around an obstacle. It teaches us to find solutions without conflict or force, and to be in harmony with the environment. It teaches us to be open to change, that to be wise means to adapt to the circumstances in which we find ourselves. In Taoist philosophy, water, which yields, is stronger than anything hard and rigid.

How to Use the MOVE Color Palette

If you find yourself a little bit shaky about how to begin with moving forward, get some tips on how to get your body moving in this link. Research has shown that exercise helps improve mood and reduces anxiety by taking your mind off your worries and releasing those feel-good endorphins in your body. What also can help is to talk to someone you trust, so find someone, family or friend who knows how to listen. If you can, also see a professional.

Surround yourself with the happy colors of MOVE or any other colors that appeal to you and make you feel strong. Just remember Einstein’s words that you have to keep moving in order to keep your balance.
