We like to cover most, if not all, of our bases here in Boysen. Aside from the usual architectural paint, we also have a line of surface preparation products, Konstrukt Construction Chemicals. That should sound familiar to you if you’ve been reading through the blog. Our modern cement finishes, Konstrukt Lunar Series, is made from products from this brand. Now, Konstrukt has a lot of sub-brands under it. For this article, we’ll be telling you all there is to know about Konstrukt Tileworks.

What is Konstrukt Tileworks?

There are places in the home that are just not cut out for architectural paint. For especially moist or humid areas such as bathrooms, it’s probably best to go with tiles. This is where Konstrukt Tileworks comes in. There are two products under this brand namely, K-302 All-Purpose Tile Adhesive and K-321 Tile Adhesion Promoter.

K-302 All-Purpose Tile Adhesive us a cement-based adhesive for homogenous tile installations such as ceramic tiles for walls and floors.

K-321 Tile Adhesion Promoter is an acrylic-based liquid emulsion that is mixed with K-302 All-Purpose Tile Adhesive for tile-on-tile or heavy-duty applications.

How do I use Konstrukt Tileworks?

For Heavy-Duty Applications

If you’re working with large format or heavy tiles (usually sized 60x60cm and above), you need more grip and adhesion to the surface. This is where K-321 Tile Adhesion Promoter comes in.

Mix a 25-kg bag of K-302 All-Purpose Tile Adhesive with 6 Liters of clean water in a clean container. Add in at least 1/4 Liter of K-321 Tile Adhesion Promoter and thoroughly stir the resulting mixture together using a mixing device.

Always dampen the substrate before applying the mixture. Using a notched trowel, spread the adhesive around a square meter at a time. Apply to desired level and smoothen any uneven surfaces. Now, you can place and align your tiles. Adjust the tiles’ height accordingly by gently tapping the tiles using a rubber mallet. Please take note that there is only a 15-minute working time to fix the tiles around.

For Tile-on-Tile Applications

There are also instances when you can’t just remove the old tiling in the bathroom, if that’s the case, here’s what you do.

Mix 1 Liter of K-321 Tile Adhesion Promoter, 1 Liter of clean water, and 3 kilograms of K-302 All-Purpose Tile Adhesive in a clean container. After attaining the desired consistency, apply the mixture using a brush on the existing tiles. Let the mixture dry for 3 to 4 hours (or overnight, if possible) before tiling.

For horizontal applications such as flooring, add 1/4 Liter of K-321 Tile Adhesion Promoter to a 25 kilogram bag of K-302 All-Purpose Tile Adhesive. For vertical applications such as walls, add in 1/2 Liter of K-321 Tile Adhesion Promoter to a 25 kilogram bag of K-302 All-Purpose Tile Adhesive.

Using a notched trowel, spread the resulting mixture onto the existing tile a square meter at a time. You can apply up to a thickness of 3mm minimum.

For Normal Applications

If you’re using regular tiles (those that are sized 30×30 cm and below), there’s usually no need to incorporate K-321 Tile Adhesion Promoter in your application process.

Mix a 25-kg bag of K-302 All-Purpose Tile Adhesive with 6 Liters of clean water. Stir the mixture using a mixing device until homogenous. Wait for around 2 minutes before using the mixture. Take note that cement or any other materials cannot be added into it.

Using a notched trowel, spread the mixture one square meter at a time. Place and align tiles. Gently tap on the tiles using a rubber mallet to adjust the height. Remember to fix your tiles within a 15 minute period!
