This is for all the crafty beautiful ladies out there who are interested to make their own beauty dock. Or this post can also be for their partners who want to earn extra brownie points. This video tutorial uses Boysen OIl Wood Stain and Hudson Timber Coat.

Buying a beauty dock from the store would be the easiest route of course. But there is a real sense of fulfillment to seeing something tangible which you created with your own hands. Enough said, watch the video.

The Beauty Industry

The boom in the beauty industry is now largely led by the Asia-Pacific market that comprises 40% of the global market. The top 3 categories worldwide are skincare, hair care and make-up.

K-Beauty, which started to trend in 2016, is now a phenomenon. There’s that famous “glass skin” look which denotes a healthy glow. For a beauty enthusiast, a walk around Myeongdong in Seoul can be heavenly. There you will find all the ingredients you’d need for your 10-step Korean Skincare Routine. But you don’t have to go there because French beauty retailer Sephora and many others make the dream of physical beauty accessible with just a few taps on a keyboard.

There is also the no make-up make-up look. There are numerous hacks (from seriously amateurish to highly professional) in YouTube to teach you how to achieve that.

The look is further cemented into our consciousness by the parade of K-drama and K-pop stars whose meaning of physical perfection we see worldwide via streaming services. Add to this the social media buzz created by beauty vloggers and other content makers. We see the kind of beauty that many aspire to have –

Poreless. Flawless. Ageless.

When Less is More

We also now see the rise of a counterculture.

There is a shift from the increasing consumerism, when beauty enthusiasts are questioning their buying habits. Led by the Millennials and Generation Z audiences, the awareness is increasing about the environmental campaign Zero Waste Week that “reported that over 120 billion units of packaging are produced each year by the cosmetics industry worldwide. The vast majority of this packaging – largely in the form of bottles, pots and tubes – is not recycled after a single use.” (Beauty Business Journal, 2019)

In May 2016, Alicia Keys talked about the #nomakeup look. Her take on make-up goes more than skin-deep. Her essay in Lenny Letter ends with the following,

I hope to God it’s a revolution.

‘Cause I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing.

I would call this the rise of another look (and more than just a look) –

Bare. Honest. Authentic.

Kriz’s Beauty Dock

Kriz made a fairly simple beauty dock and drilled just four holes in it. This is good for those girls who neither go for a complicated beauty routine nor the #nomakeup look.

This reminds me of the KISS principle in project management, the acronym for Keep it simple, stupid.

For residents of cities like Manila or Cebu where hours of commute to and from work are part of the daily agenda, KISS is a good motto.

Extend that KISS also to your DIY projects. If you hit a barrier while KISSing, just call your friendly makeup experts Boysen technical experts at (02) 8363-9738 local 417 to 418 during office hours, or write our equally friendly community team at ask@myboysen.com.
