Make Spaces Where You Can Breathe | MyBoysen

In May 2020, I wrote a post about discovering slow living during the quarantine. The pace may have picked up but the world has changed. Many of us have changed. We were able to experience how it was to take a step back from the crazy speed of the daily grind. Turning our attention to health, nature, and finding time for ourselves and loved ones have been good for us, and we know it.

Now that the world is opening up, a new term has also cropped up. Revenge travel. Most of us get it. We understand the thrill of discovering new places or visiting favorite haunts. Most of all, we miss the carefree feeling we get, spirits soaring as vacay starts. Many now know that it does not necessarily have to be that way, that we don’t have to get out just to feel relaxed. Living in the now, being present, awake and aware—those are buzzwords of today’s woke individuals. What once was considered odd and alternative, or New Age in the 1970s, is now so fashionable that it has become very much part of the mainstream. That is why many re-imagine and re-make home spaces to respond to the need for grounding and authentic connections to ourselves and the people around us, also to nature.

So go on, put on your creative hat and dream up ways to make your home a place of peace and tranquility, a staycation resort that you consider perfect. If you have beach homes, farms, or mountain huts that belong to your family, now may be the time to give them a makeover too.

Make Your Own Kind of Beautiful

A place to breathe does not necessarily mean neat and tidy, minimalist, or spare. There are people who feel that having treasured things around them, at touching distance, gives them that feeling of comfort and safety. Whatever gives you that feeling of security in your home, just do it. When we feel secure, we relax, and our breath deepens. We take in more air and the cycle between inhaling and exhaling lengthens. This is definitely a healthier way to be.

There is so much expansiveness inside us when we live an authentic life, which means we are being true to ourselves. So do the same thing in decorating your home. Just ask yourself what a beautiful home means to you, and make just that. Layer your home with objects that have value for you. Fill it with plants, Hang a curtain where they should be hung, or where they shouldn’t. Up to you.

A Stylish but Spare Nest

Not everyone is like a bowerbird that wants to build a showy nest. Some of us like it crisp and clean, yet still exciting. Make a striking bedroom with the dark colors Utterly Pottery and Charcoal Mask. These colors provide the drama that you may want. Keep the rest of the space in a light neutral or white. Nothing looks so inviting as crisp white sheets that are pulled tight.

Bedrooms are so important for our well-being. After all, that’s where we slow down and sleep to give our bodies time to heal. Facing a new day is always best when one has gotten a good night’s rest.

By the way, changing the sheets is best done once a week. Once every two weeks is stretching it too much. Beyond that, it’s not good for your health.

Step Outside the Terrace

Biophilia, our innate connection to nature, has come to the fore in the last two years. With the quarantines, people had left the city to find their peace in rural surroundings.

If your property allows it, make a living space outdoors and get closer to nature. Succumb to the charms outside the four walls of your home. As famed interior designer Nate Berkus puts it, “My philosophy for inside—which extends outside—is that you should create and craft a space that brings you joy, brings you serenity, and allows you to come together with those you love.”

Paint colors Baby Steps, Morning Yoga, and But First, Coffee, would cast a warm glow to your terrace, perfect for the greenery that would ideally be found in your garden. It’s a great place for hanging out with your loved ones.

Posh it Up by the Poolside

That image above is to indulge my fantasies about a posh pool just outside the sliding doors of the living room. Definitely aspirational for me because I don’t have the means to get myself one of those, also not the dwelling that goes with it. Before the pandemic, I dreamt about a detached house with a pool. I mentioned it to an architect friend of mine. He very forcefully recommended not to have a pool. It is expensive, needs daily upkeep and a lot of maintenance, he said emphatically. There went my dream pool…down the drain (pun intended).

But to those who are swimming in oodles of cash (pun still intended, sorry), do get yourself a pool if that is what your heart desires. Or a pond, with koi lazily swimming around, would be a great addition. Ponds are soothing, add coolness to gardens, and are tranquil spaces for you to relax and enjoy the sounds of nature. A soothing place to breathe, in other words.

Create spaces where you can breathe in your home exteriors or interiors. Consider Boysen Color Trend 2022/23 Breath color palette when you’re in the dreaming phase. Download the brochure here.
