So what’s the difference between the two?

Boysen Xyladecor is a solvent-based, deep-penetrating type of stain that combines decorative, water repellent and wood preserving properties in one product. On the other hand, Boysen Oil Wood Stain is a solvent-based stain that adds freshness and color to any wooden surface as it provides superior protection. Both products give any type of wood a fresher appeal but only one can be used outside. The primary difference between the two is that Xyladecor is intended for both interior and exterior wooden surfaces while Oil Wood stain is formulated to protect only interior woodworks such as cabinets, furniture, paneling.

They also require two totally different systems. While Xyladecor is a stand-alone stain, which means you can use it without a topcoat, Oil Wood Stain is used in tandem with BOYSEN Varnish products such as Boysen Lacquer and Hudson Timbercoat to maximize its effectiveness. Another thing that tells the two products apart is the price difference. Boysen made sure that their products are priced competitively vis-a-vis market prices, without having to sacrifice its quality. Just take a look at Oil Wood Stain which you can use as a cost-effective alternative to Xyladecor, except that the former is only to be used for interior surfaces.

How to use Boysen Oil Wood Stain

Before going through the process, prepare the surface properly to avoid future troubles. Sand surface until it is smooth to the touch and no shards or rough edges remain. Make sure that the surface isn’t previously varnished since the stain won’t be able to penetrate it. Hammer all nails deep enough to apply putty. Dust off the surface afterward then wipe with a clean rag. If repainting, remove all paint first by wire brushing or scraping then proceed with the process.

Open grain wood can be filled with BOYSEN Natural Wood Paste Filler B-60 using a putty knife. You can tint the filler with stain to match your desired shade. Allow the filler to set for 15 minutes then rub off excess across the grain. Let it dry overnight.

Once done with all the preparations which might take a whole day, apply Boysen Oil Wood Stain to your bare wood without primers or undercoats. Lightly brush or wipe over once along the grain to remove excess material until the surface is totally dry. Drying takes eight hours or longer so plan your day ahead. Recoat for a darker shade.

If you’re having a hard time choosing which paint to use as topcoat, follow this link and let Boysen help you. Just fill out the necessary information about your wooden surface including the type of surface and its current condition.

      2. Is it exposed to sunlight?
      3. As of the moment, does the wooden surface have any existing coating on it? If yes, may we know what specific paint or varnish has been used and if it is still in good condition (ex: no flaking)?
