Product Highlight: Hudson Polyurethane Floor Varnish

Each Boysen product has its own purpose. In our previous post, we gave you a guide to Boysen Wood Varnishes, their importance and use. To recap, these are mainly used on interior wood furniture and spaces with little to no foot traffic. When you’re about to paint your wooden flooring where substantial weight passes through each day, it’s best to use Hudson Polyurethane Floor Varnish Sealer and Topcoat. This is what we’re going to highlight in this article. Buckle up, DIYer.

Hudson Polyurethane Floor Varnish Sealer is an aromatic, two-component urethane sealer that serves as the first coating for properly primed wooden floors. It provides good adhesion to its partner, Hudson Polyurethane Floor Varnish Topcoat, an aromatic, two-component, urethane topcoat for wooden surfaces. The two work hand in hand to give your floors a lasting good impression from the first step onward. Aside from wooden flooring, the tandem is also perfect for countertops and other interior wooden surfaces.

How to Prepare the Material

It is advisable to ask for professional help when using these products, but if you think you have what it takes to ace this at one go, you need to learn the right application process. Since both products comprise two components each, you should know how to accurately prepare both.

For every 3.5 Liter can of Hudson Polyurethane Floor Varnish Sealer, mix it with ½ Liter of its catalyst. While Hudson Polyurethane Floor Varnish Topcoat should be mixed with its catalyst on a 3:1 ratio by volume. The maximum workability for both products is four hours. Any unused material when the clock strikes 4 will gel and should be disposed of.

Important note: The catalyst used in this painting system is considered dangerous to health. Make sure that the area is well-ventilated. Do not have food in the area. Keep kids out too during the paint job.

How to Use Hudson Polyurethane Floor Varnish

First, move out all the furniture in the area you’re about to work on. Next, you must prepare the surface before applying the first coating. For new applications, Boysen paint experts advise using only kiln-dried wood to avoid discoloration of the wood brought about by its natural moisture. Sand surface until it is smooth to the touch and then hammer all nails deep enough to apply wood filler if necessary. Dust the dirt off the surface and then wipe it clean. If you’re repainting and you’re hesitant of the coatings’ compatibility, remove all existing coating before the application of Hudson Polyurethane products. Proper surface preparation is the most important step to a successful paint job.

Once you’re done with all the initial preparations, move on to the actual application. Follow the Boysen suggested schedule to guarantee you the flooring of your dreams. Check out the image below.

If the need to adjust the viscosity or lapot of the coating arises, use Hudson Polyurethane Floor Varnish Reducer as needed. The whole system is highly reactive to moisture. To avoid possible problems, make sure that the can lids are kept closed when not in use.

Allow the coating to cure for 3 days for light traffic and 7 days for heavy-duty use, which means you may not be able to use the whole area for the meantime.
