It’s been a while since you held your brush up, ready to paint away. How have you been, DIYer? Hardware stores are finally reopening in line with the easing of the quarantine guidelines and you can finally push through with your painting projects. If one of the many things you planned on doing before the virus caught you off guard is painting your wooden floors anew, take a look at this product that can help you achieve it:

Hudson Timbercoat is a one-component, water-based, non-yellowing urethane coating ideal for finishes on wood and parquet floors used for residences, condominiums, offices, and townhouses. A one-component system, Timbercoat is a 2-in-1 sealer and topcoat that doesn’t require a catalyst. It is easy to apply and can resist constant traffic and abrasion thanks to its outstanding flexibility.

While Hudson Polyurethane Floor Varnish Sealer and Topcoat is best to use only on interior wooden floors and surfaces, Hudson Timbercoat is formulated for both interior and exterior surfaces. Plus, since it is water-based, it takes care of not only the environment but also the people around it.

It comes in three different finishes—gloss, semi-gloss, and matte—giving you more options for the sheen you prefer. Hudson Timbercoat gives off a mild odor during and after the paint job so you can hang around the workspace. For safety though, make sure that the area has good ventilation and you sanitize yourself every now and then.

Aside from wooden flooring, you can also use it on your furniture, cabinets, doors, and panels to give them extra shine and protection to last longer.

Prepare the Surface First

Before applying Hudson Timbercoat, you must prepare the surface properly. Excellent end results start from excellent preparation. Below are some points to remember:

For new wood:

  1. Use only kiln-dried wood.
  2. Hammer down nail heads for putty application.
  3. Sand rough wood until smooth, then dust off before painting.

For existing wood:

  1. Remove loose paint.
  2. Scuff sand intact film to provide anchorage for succeeding coats.
  3. If old coating is oil-based, scrape all existing paint to bare surface.

For initial sanding, use 80-100 grit sandpaper followed by a 400 grit sandpaper. By using different grit sizes, you will be able to establish a smooth, scratch-free surface. This process also removes the existing wax or grease. The surface to be painted should be clean and dry so make sure to manually clean the surface thoroughly or to use a vacuum cleaner after every sanding.

How to Use Hudson Timbercoat Polyurethane Waterbased Wood Coating

Once done with the preparation, proceed to painting. Shake the container for 15-30 seconds first and then transfer some to a separate container for easier application. Using a brush, roller, or spray brush, apply the first coating of Hudson Timbercoat. Again, since our highlighted product is a 2-in-1 sealer and topcoat, the first coat will serve as the sealer. Let it dry for an hour then lightly sand the surface. Apply another coat and then repeat the process. Continue coating and sanding the surface until you are satisfied with the result, allowing at least an hour interval between the coats. It will take 7 days for the surface to be fully cured so make sure you have space to store your furniture for the duration.

Important reminder:

  • Do not use Hudson Timbercoat over alkyd-based wood fillers & wood stains.
  • Tannin naturally appears in some wood species. Finished results may vary depending on wood species.

Hudson Timbercoat is available at leading hardware stores nationwide. But since most of the areas are still under quarantine, check the store operating hours first before heading out. Make sure to sanitize the paint can and the rest of the sundries before using them in your home.
