Product Highlight: Know Your Boysen Putty

When you walk into a room, you admire the vibrant colors of the wall but rarely notice the flawless texture of it.  The smoothness of the wall is often an afterthought despite all the hard work that happens before the eye-catching topcoat.  Here, we’re putting the spotlight on the product that makes it possible for painters to cover those awkward tiny cracks and imperfections to achieve a smooth finish.

Putty or masilya is a product used to correct minor surface unevenness and hairline cracks. Seasoned painters know that you only apply putty after you’ve primed the surface. Usually, minor surface flaws become more visible when you’ve applied the primer, which is the perfect time to correct them before finishing the job with the topcoat.

Pagmamasilya vs. Pagpapalitada

Combing through our Facebook page, we’ve noticed that some use palitada and masilya interchangeably to mean the same thing, which is “to even out the surface.” Plastering (palitada) and putty (masilya) are different in the sense that you do pagpapalitada before the painting process while pagmamasilya happens in the actual painting process. Pagmamasilya is part of the painting system.

For those who are still in the dark, here is a quick guide.

Pagpapalitada, for starters, is for bare concrete surfaces. You often hear the phrase, “habulin na lang sa palitada ‘yan” because contractors make a final attempt to achieve a smooth finish. This process involves the use of render and skimcoat to correct concrete defects like bubbles, honeycomb, and waviness. All of these happen before painting. You only apply render (Konstrukt Permaplast K-202 High-Performance Acrylic Render) and skimcoat (Konstrukt Permaplast K201 High-Performance Acrylic Skimkote) on bare concrete surfaces. Render is used to patch uneven walls from 3 mm to 5 mm while skimcoat can correct 2 mm-3 mm surface imperfections.

After the curing process, start preparing the surface for painting. When you finally have a clean, dry, and smooth surface, apply the primer. As much as possible, you want to get an even finish before painting. In reality, after priming the surface, it will reveal the tiny flaws that you missed out earlier. This is why putty is necessary. You apply putty on primed surfaces to cover hairline cracks and minor surface imperfections (usually less than 1 mm) so you’d get a flawless finish.
