Millennials are not getting any younger. The oldest Millennials will be turning 42 years old this year and the youngest 26. This puts the oldest of the Gen Zs at 25—grown enough to have a job and move away from their parents. As they start to live on their own, we’re also seeing shared preferences in how they style their spaces. Here are common features in Gen Z interior decorating:

1. Self-expression and Maximalism

Gen Z only knows a world where the internet exists. Social media then is a big part of their lives. Compared to the generations that came before them, it’s no surprise that they’re the most attuned to it as well. Gen Z are critical of staged, scripted, and filtered posts. Instead, they gravitate towards authenticity and “realness”.

Because of this, creativity and self-expression are celebrated and encouraged, including when it comes to interior design and home decorating. Clutter is less of a concern when expressing your individuality is the goal. Gen Z will show off their interests and hobbies with pride. Favorite knick-knacks, souvenirs from travel, and other cherished items will be displayed in the home. It’s less polished, but that’s the point!

This lessened concern for curating will result in maximalism—another distinct deviation from Minimalism, the Millennial sweetheart. For Gen Z, less isn’t always more.

2. Color and Lots of It

Where minimalism favors a rather strict color palette composed primarily of neutrals, maximalism is bold and isn’t confined to just a handful of hues. After all, it can be easier to express yourself when you’re freer to add in whatever colors, textures, and materials you want.

There will still be Gen Z who go for minimalist interiors, of course, but they’re less likely to be restricted by its rules. For example, you may find a lot of neutrals but there will also be a fair sprinkling of pastels.

Again, it may seem less polished and maybe even a little chaotic but so what? Come as you are, says Gen Z. Some even view Gen Z’s liking for maximalism as a sort of rebellion against the older generations who wanted homes that always looked impeccable and flawless (a.k.a. looked like they came straight out of a magazine or furniture catalog). A Gen Z home doesn’t pretend. Life can get messy and so can your home.

3. Eco-consciousness at Home

As generations before greedily took advantage of the earth’s natural resources, Gen Z now feel they must undo what’s been done. They have a strong sense of environmental responsibility which leads them to make choices that are more sustainable and eco-conscious.

They thrift and buy second-hand furniture when possible and have a fondness for upcycled and vintage décor pieces. Good for the environment and financially savvy too!

In a Gen Z home, the furniture may not match perfectly (as chances are high that they were bought pre-loved) but you can bet the space will have a lot of personality. They do get trends as well, of course, like the infamous wavy mirror, but overall, they tend to stick to their values when it comes to deciding what to spend on.
