Painting may seem to be an easy process, and it is once you’ve understood the process. The following may add to the complexity:

  • different types of surfaces that need (re)painting
  • whether it’s painting a new surface or (re)painting
  • whether you will be painting an interior surface or an exterior one
  • the performance features you are looking for in a paint, e.g., waterproofing, odor-less, antibacterial, quick-drying, etc.
  • the paint system that you will be using, from primer to topcoat

In Let it B, we use infographics, which is a collection of visuals and minimal text, to make it easy for our readers to understand the Boysen products and painting process.

Here are the top infographics that could help you with your painting projects.

1   The Right Boysen Paint for Different Surfaces

What Boysen Products Should I Use for My Painting Project? | MyBoysen

Boysen has many products which are formulated for different surfaces — concrete, drywall, wood, and metal. It also matters whether the surface you are painting is outside or inside the home.

With the infographic above, you can see at a glance, what topcoat you should be considering for your surface.

Follow this link to know more about the painting process for each surface.

2   The Right Boysen Primer for Your Painting System

What Boysen Primer Should I Use for My Painting Project? | MyBoysen

Once you’ve decided what topcoat you want, then you should see what primer would go with it.

Primers are preparatory coatings that ensure better paint adhesion and durability.

Some primers are formulated to help cover the surface well to make the color coat or topcoat more vibrant when it’s applied on your walls. They also provide additional protection to a specific type of surface.

3   A Guide to Boysen Sealers

What Boysen Sealer Should I Use for My Painting Project? | MyBoysen

Sealers and primers are essentially the same. They’re both preparatory coatings that seal the surface, provide better paint adhesion, and prepare it for the succeeding topcoat. The only difference is that most Boysen sealers are clear coats while Boysen primers are pigmented.

Choosing a sealer or a primer is a matter of aesthetics. Read more about it by clicking on this link.

4   A Guide to Boysen Paint Thinners

Important: Some paint products are ready to be used as supplied and do not need thinning such as Elasti-kote and Permatex B-3101, make sure to read the technical data at the back of the Boysen can to know how to maximize the use of each product.

Thinning solvents are used to adjust the viscosity or lapot of solvent-based paints. The viscosity of the paint is a key indicator of its ability to deliver an even and uniform coating.

Since most paints are ready to be used and have a consistent thickness for brush and roller paint applications, most of the time, the need for thinners and reducers arises when you use a different method, for example, using a paint spray.

5   Know Your Boysen Putty

Boysen Putty Products Infographic

This infographic shows the different Boysen putties available and the painting system they belong to.

Putty or masilya is a product used to correct minor surface unevenness and hairline cracks. Seasoned painters know that you only apply putty after you’ve primed the surface. Usually, minor surface flaws become more visible when you’ve applied the primer, which is the perfect time to correct them before finishing the job with the topcoat.

Surface preparation done right makes your walls look smooth and flawless.

6   The Painting Process

Quick guide Pagmamasilya vs Pagpapalitada

We keep repeating that surface preparation is key to perfectly-painted walls. Then there is the painting itself after you’ve made the surface smooth and even.

Boysen’s standard painting system has three Ps. Just remember that it goes as follows and you will avoid any paint problems:

P – PRIMER – Apply the PRIMER first
P – PUTTY – Make your surface smooth by applying PUTTY to hairline cracks or imperfections
P – PAINT – PAINT the surface with your chosen topcoat

Let me come up with a mnemonic so that it is easier for you to remember. Just say PRIPUPA for primer-putty-paint.

7   Using Boysen Colorants for Pastel Colors

Colorants in 1/4-liter cans are available in our Mix and Match Stations so that you can come up with your signature paint color for your home.

There are three different types of colors for different types of paints — water-based, lacquer-based, and alkyd- or oil-based. But all these different types will get you dreamy pastel paint colors.

You can buy pastel colors, of course, at our Mix and Match Stations but mixing your own colors are for those of you who want a more unique look for your homes. These are also good for those artists who want to paint their own wall murals.

The most important thing to remember is that the ideal ratio of colorant to paint is 1:16.

Watch the video in this post to learn how to mix colorants with paint.

9   Boysen’s Paint Finishes

The sheen or kintab of paint depends on the surface you will be painting, whether it’s a high-traffic or a low-traffic one. It also depends on aesthetics and functionality.

This infographic is important, therefore, to help you pick out the paint finish.

Read this post to know more. This may be an oldie but it’s a goodie.

10  Why Pigment Volume Concentration Matters

What Is Pigment Volume Concentration and Why Is It Important?

Boysen products have always been known for their quality, which comes from the formulation of the products and the excellent raw materials used.

Pigment Volume Concentration, or PVC, is the ration of pigment to binder. The higher the PVC, the better the density and hiding. PVC is related to the gloss and sheen of the paint. High gloss paints may have lesser pigment and would, therefore, have a PVC of less than 40%. On the other end of the spectrum, flat wall paints, contain high levels of pigment and extenders, which means it has PVC ranging from 40-80%. However, performance quality such as durability, stain, and corrosion resistance typically decreases as PVC increases, and vice versa.

If you can’t follow that, that’s ok. Just look at the infographic above and you should be able to choose the right sheen of paint you should get for the surface you will be painting.

Go to this post to find out more about PVC.
