Our last video tutorial for the year is on how to make New Year’s Eve confetti poppers! Yes, we want this: Make a beautiful, colorful, shiny mess to end this year with a bang, Although this is just as much for the New Year—to greet it with happy stuff, something that awakens the effervescence of the child in each of us. With the challenges that we have gone through, we need silly rituals too. And even if it is just for a moment that we feel bubbly and happy again, why not, right? Being always practical makes for a stodgy Benjie or Margie (apologies to the Benjies and Margies out there,,,just wanted names that would rhyme).

The Tradition of Confettis

This tradition started in Italy in the early 19th century. The word confetti itself also originates from Italy, It was used for the small sweets made of almonds in hard sugar coating. Medyo masakit pag matamaan ka. Our confetti is made of different kinds of paper. Let the younger kids do the punching since this is an easy task. Adults with two left hands can also be given this task.

I suggest adding a small piece of paper with a happy quote about home, much like those in fortune cookies. Some examples:

  • “East or west, home is best.”
  • “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.”
  • “A house is made of bricks and beams. A home is made of hopes and dreams.”
  • “May your home always be too small to hold all of your friends.”
  • “It’s not how big the house is, it’s how happy the home is.”

Or you could even have inspirational quotes like these to get everyone all fired up for the coming year:

  • “There is do, or do not. There is no try.” –Yoda
  • “Opportunities multiply as they are seized.” –Sun Tzu
  • “Take a chance and you may lose. Take not a chance and you have lost already.”  –Søren Kierkegaard
  • “Forget regret,  or life is yours to miss.” –Jonathan Larson
  • “Whether you think that you can or that you can’t, you are usually right.”  –Henry Ford
