Bea just got off from her 12-hour night shift. She is a nurse in New Zealand. She’s also a part-time online tutor. When she’s not at the hospital, she’s on Skype teaching Korean kids basic English. She works tirelessly every day.
“I’d like to be with my family soon. It’s just until I earn enough money to buy our dream house,” Bea said. Two years ago, she married Robert. Instead of having a baby, they decided to save up first and secure their family’s financial future.
This is the reality for most OFWs. They go abroad and endure working in an unfamiliar place. For now, Bea is looking forward to coming back home for Christmas. She has felt homesick since her first day here. “Every day, I look forward to coming back. It’s the little things that I miss the most, our countless family dinners, their voice and touch, and many other things that I took for granted,” Bea said over the phone.
When I asked her how she copes with homesickness, she replied, “I always call my hubby or my friends whenever I feel homesick. I cook Filipino food like adobo. I listen to OPM songs too. Nakakasawa ‘yong tugtug dito.”

Robert is curled up asleep on a king-size bed, too big for him. He has a lot on his plate today. After his office work, he will look for party recipes and painting ideas online. From preparing the right food to repainting their home for the family reunion, he wants to stay on top of everything for Bea’s homecoming.
He shared, “As early as September, I’ve started getting ready for her homecoming party.” He goes the extra mile to create an impression when she comes back. “It’s a little treat for her after all her sacrifices abroad,” he added.
He can already picture it—the fun welcome home party in their bright and beautiful living room.
