Hi Lettie,

Can I still use Boysen Primeguard as a primer for my galvanized iron surface if it’s already been exposed for more than 6 months?

Thanks.

From,
Boysen User A

Hi Boysen User A,

The short answer is no. You cannot use Boysen Primeguard on old GI surfaces. Boysen Primeguard is formulated for use only on new galvanized metals as well as hard-to-adhere metal surfaces such as aluminum and stainless steel.

The best primer to use for metals would be Boysen Epoxy Primer. However, for metals around the house, such as if you’re painting a roof, my recommended primers are Boysen Red Oxide Metal Primer and Boysen Rust-Off Gray.

A water-based metal primer, use Boysen Primeguard to prime stainless steel, aluminum, and other hard-to-adhere metal surfaces. It is not recommended for repainting projects and on surfaces with existing rusting.

Boysen Epoxy Primer

Choose Boysen Epoxy Primer when you’re going for an extremely durable coating and you’re using epoxy paint as a topcoat such as Boysen Acqua Epoxy and Boysen Epoxy Enamel. It’s best applied by professionals or experienced painters.

Boysen Red Oxide Metal Primer

The go-to Boysen metal primer is Boysen Red Oxide Metal Primer for painting new metal surfaces and repainting rusted metal surfaces around the home like roofs. If you’re choosing a light-colored topcoat like white, however, go for Boysen Rust-Off.

An alternative to Boysen Red Oxide Metal Primer, use Boysen Rust-Off when you’re planning on using a light-colored topcoat such as white. Like the former, this primer has reliable rust-inhibiting properties and can be used on various metal surfaces around the home such as roofs.
