If you want your walls to speak, you can try to get these new designs. They’re pricey but if you’re the type to want to have something fresh and unique, you may want to consider having something like these wall coverings. An accent wall with these wallpapers can be a statement piece in any room in the house, and would go a long way to make your home decidedly distinctive.

The new designs range from bold, lush, geometrical, minimalist to modern, and get their inspiration from nature, historical exotica, surreal scenes, etc.  Check out Designmixer, Wallyart, Joli Jour Paris, Wellpapers, Sansonnet, La Maison Muraem. Those are just a few suppliers. I also don’t know if they are represented here in the Philippines. If you have engaged an architect or interior designer to manage your home build or renovation, they would know best where to get these products, or their substitutes, locally.

Surface Preparation

This blog has got a category dedicated to surface preparation. Before you install the wallpaper, make sure that you have a pristine wall that does not have any blemishes, and that is most of all, dry. Improper or inadequate surface preparation is almost always the root of most painting epic fails. The same is true when you use wallpaper instead of paint.

Painting is much easier than installing wallpaper. It also helps that majority of the Filipinos are more used to paint rather than wallpaper.  Not only is painting easier but it also is less expensive, especially if you go for something as pricey as a handmade wallpaper. But of course, that is comparing apples to oranges. The impact of both would be different.

If you opt for wallpaper, here’s how you should do the surface preparation as told to us by our technical guru. Remember that an uneven surface and damp are your kryptonite, so make sure your walls are smooth and dry!

Do the following:

  1. Prime BARE surface first with Boysen Flat Latex then putty minor imperfections with Boysen Masonry Putty.
  2. Then apply a full coat of Boysen Acrylic Emulsion. This coating acts as a barrier against dampness on concrete walls.

Paint or Wallpaper?

Ask yourself first how much you want your home to be unique and make an impact. You can do it with paint definitely. You can even have a mural painted so you can opt for that instead of wallpaper.

But the novelty of wallpaper is something else entirely, especially in the Philippines where most homes don’t use these wall coverings, or at least not with these new wallpaper designs with the wow factor that just came out.

Still not sure? Read this article. Maybe it can help you decide.

And if you decide to use paint, we’ve got you covered from surface preparation to topcoat.
