Seasoned painters often go for Boysen Patching Compound for fixing minor imperfections on concrete surfaces and drywall. A job-site mixed putty has its conveniences and advantages. If you’ll be using this for your home, just remember to follow the correct mixing ratio of Boysen Patching Compound.
Following the Correct Mixing Ratio
Because Patching Compound is a powder-type material mixed with latex paint, when the resulting mixture dries after application, residual sediments can appear on the surface. This is similar to chalking, and it is an adverse effect caused by using too much of the powder, and not enough of the latex paint.
On the other hand, use more latex paint than Patching Compound, and the resulting putty mixture will not bind properly. It will only adhere on the surface on the basis of the mixture having paint, but it won’t be effective at fixing cracks and correcting other imperfections. That won’t work as your ideal putty.
Strictly mix 1 kg to 1.5 kg of Boysen Patching Compound with 4 liters of latex paint. This mixture will give coverage for up to 25 square meters. If you ever need less, ensure you still stick to the correct ratio. For example, if you use half a 4-L container (that’s 2 liters), then use half a kilo of the powder. If you use 1-L of latex paint, use 1/4 of the powder, and so on.

Always be mindful of how much of the material (whether the Patching Compound or the latex paint), you are using to prevent painting problems. Once chalking forms and you won’t be able to address it, it might affect adherence of your topcoat.
Equivalents to Boysen Patching Compound
While availability of materials can factor into why you would use Boysen Patching Compound, you also have other options of putty for walls. Specifically, those that are use-as-supplied.
A particular alternative is Boysen Masonry Putty, when you will be using water-based topcoats. If you will be using Boysen Acrytex, use Boysen Acrytex Cast as its putty to ensure compatibility among products used. You can also use this paint system for wood surfaces.

If hairline cracks and surface imperfections have a size that exceeds 1 mm but is not more than 2 mm, use Boysen Perma-putty. You can also use this for stucco and plaster.

The aforementioned putties don’t need mixing. If you want to correct surface imperfections greater than 2 mm, you have to use skimcoats or renders for an even look. Read more about it here.
