Figuring out how to make a room cooler is one of the things we think about when transforming our rooms, especially since work from home (WFH) and online class set-ups have been made more common.

When I was in elementary school, classes were only suspended due to strong rains and typhoons. Now, the climate has gotten so bad that heat spells during the dry seasons are unbearable. Back in college, classes had to be online during particularly hot days, so we wouldn’t have to go out. But that doesn’t change the fact that our own homes don’t always protect us from sweltering weather. Make your room tolerable against the heat by following the tips below.

01 Let Cool Air In, Blow Warm Air Out

This seems obvious. But winds being erratic makes optimizing your ventilation tricky. It’s good if you have multiple windows on different sides of your room. If you don’t have that, just ensure to put your electric fan in strategic locations. Point it towards outside your window to keep warm air out during the day, and bring cool air in during the night by pointing it towards your room from your window.

A more long-term tip is to install a ventilator. It’s a more affordable alternative than using an air conditioning unit, ensuring hot air gets out and cool air gets in. Proper ventilation is certainly one of the most important things to have a refreshing and comfortable room.

02 Block Sunlight During the Day

This advice sounds contradictory. Wouldn’t you want to open your windows to circulate air? That’s true, but only if you’re actually using the room. If you leave home during the day, close your windows and use light-blocking curtains to avoid heat build-up in rooms.

I find this a really effective hack. From where I live, my apartment’s front has those wide metal furnishings that block the sun from heating the walls. The sunlight that does pass through is blocked by my curtains. This is useful advice even if you still use air conditioning, preventing your AC from working too hard to cool your space.

03 Declutter for More Breathing Space

Sometimes, the reason your room seems too hot is that there isn’t enough breathing room for yourself or for the air to ventilate properly. There are also some materials that insulate heat very well, that it emanates into your whole room. Take out unnecessary items in your room that may clog air circulation. In general, less clutter makes a room feel more “breathable”.

If you also use your room a lot, you can make the switch to lighter materials. This applies to your curtains, blankets, and pillows which you could swap for lighter materials. Don’t forget to also clean the filter of your AC if you’re depending on it.

04 Use Presko Colors for Your Room

Sometimes, you can use color psychology hacks to make a room feel cooler. Or trust in the physics of color by choosing those that do not absorb heat. By going for cool colors with low saturation and minimal gloss sheen (like Virtuoso Silk Touch), you can change the ambiance to be something that is more refreshing and comfortable.

Light and airy neutral colors make a room feel less heavy. Deep shades are useful for a cozy and warm room, but not when you spend a lot of time in it during the sweltering dry season.
