All paints have a certain elasticity to them. Some paint products, however, are more elastic than others. Enter elastomeric paints! In this Boysen explainer, we’ll tell you more about these paints and how they can benefit your home. Read on.

What is Elastomeric Paint

The clue is in the name. The defining characteristic of elastomeric paints is their elastic and flexible properties. But, why is this advantageous?

Temperature changes cause concrete—such as the walls of your house—to expand and contract. The more flexible and elastic a paint film is, the more it is able to tolerate and withstand this expansion and contraction without cracking, flaking, or peeling.

In addition, the flexible film of elastomeric paints provides excellent water resistance, preventing leaks and water seepage. Think of it like a stretchy plastic covering your walls. This flexibility also means it can bridge hairline cracks, so you get closer to that smooth and beautiful finish while simultaneously protecting your home from water damage.

Elastic Paints Vs. Rigid Paints

Boysen Acrytex is an example of a paint product with a rigid paint film. The key advantages of a rigid paint film are its hardiness and dirt resistance. They’re exceptionally durable and have great longevity. Paint with Acrytex and it will be a long time before you see it aging and deteriorating.

And, because the paint adheres firmly to the surface and stays there, it’s able to form a non-porous, watertight coating that repels water. Though preventing hairline cracks on your surface is not its priority, rest assured that rigid paint films are also great for the home.

So, how do you know when to reach for an elastomeric paint and when you need a rigid paint film? One thing to consider, says Boysen engineers, is the surface you’re painting on. Large surface areas, such as if a wall is tall and wide, have a higher likelihood of developing hairline cracks. In this case, elastomeric paints might be more suited.

On the other hand, for instances where you want your paint to stay aesthetically pleasing for a long time while being able to provide protection against heavy rains, rigid paint films are an excellent choice.
