Paint is wonderful because you can make your home as vibrant or as calm as you like with just colors. A newly painted home makes your home shiny and bright, and gives that wonderful feeling of new beginnings and fresh possibilities. It can also bring back the good old days with colors of the past, if you’re feeling nostalgic. Looking forward to the future? Let the colors of today help you stride boldly to meet your tomorrow.
Use Paint to Visually Alter the Shape and Size of a Room
There is something else that paint can achieve. I wrote about how paint can visually alter the size and shape of a room a week ago. A Boysen IG video found in the link shows the effect in a clear way. For example, f you have light-colored walls and you paint a dark color on the ceiling, you give the impression of lowering the height of the room. It’s a good tip to give a large room a more intimate feel.
How to Use Paint to Visually Alter the Shape and Size of a Room
Do you want to create an illusion of more height to the room? Paint the walls a darker color, and your ceiling a lighter color.
If you play around with colors and not just reach for that no-brainer white for your ceiling, you will be able to also create a different size and shape of a room without doing any major renovations, unless that’s what you really want to do.
Color Drenching
Just in case you don’t know it yet, the fifth wall refers to the ceiling. In this country, we are so used to painting our ceilings white. Some interior designers prefer to paint it the same color as the walls. In fact, some even recommend painting baseboards, trims, mouldings in just one color.
This is called color drenching, which is still very much recommended by interior designers.
Color drenching makes a room feel more intentional and cohesive. When using dark colors, a room could feel cozier and more intimate. Using light colors would make the room feel larger and more spacious. Whatever color you choose, professional enthusiasts say that this is a bold, sophisticated aesthetic that is worth doing.
Play with Paint Sheens
Paint Finish: What does Sheen, Gloss or Kintab in Paints Mean?
Paint sheen also adds interest to a room even if you choose just one color for the walls and ceiling. You can play with the paint sheens available. Boysen offers 5 paint finishes or paint sheens—gloss, semi-gloss, satin, matte, and flat.
Changing the paint sheen has the effect of controlling the light bouncing on the walls, which would result in changes to the ambience of the room. This may be difficult to discern if you are not a professional like an interior designer or architect. So here’s an infographic in this post to guide you, including the Boysen products that are recommended for the different walls and other surfaces.
Add Interest To A Room By Using One Paint Color In Different Sheens
Generally, the glossier the paint finish, the higher the resistance to dirt pick-up. This is the best finish for high traffic areas like walls. The Boysen brands that are great for walls because of the semi-gloss finish are Boysen Permacoat Latex and Boysen Healthy Home.
However, the matte finish of Virtuoso Silk Touch is excellent for your walls and gives that stunning look. You don’t have to worry about dirt pick-up because of its easy clean surface protector technology. An additional benefit is that it hides imperfections better than its semi-gloss cousins.
For no-traffic areas like your fifth wall (your ceiling, just in case you forgot), reach for the ever reliable Boysen Permacoat Flat Latex or Boysen Flatwall Enamel.

Painting is NOT as easy as
- buy your paint and brush or roller
- open the bucket and dip the paint brush or roller
- paint your walls with great enthusiasm
This is because the top coat, which is the color that you see, is the last product that you apply. We are talking about a painting system which starts with the substrate (or surface) you want to (re)paint.
However, once you’ve understood the system (with the Boysen app to guide you), the process should be clear and simple. If you would still have more questions, you can always write an email to ask@myboysen.com, or call (02) 8363-9738 local 417 to 418 during office hours to get someone from the technical team to hold your hand.
