We talked for the first time about the Scandinavian concept hygge in this blog in 2017. Fast forward to 2025, and hygge is as relevant as ever. This word that stands for 3 Cs—coziness, comfort, and contentment—is like a beacon that lights our way. We all want to feel its embrace, like having a warm, soft blanket wrapped around us when the weather is cold, or when we are enjoying a quiet, simple meal with people we love.
It’s October and in some parts of the world, the days are shorter, the leaves have turned, and people have started to bundle up in layers of clothing. We don’t have autumn. Instead, we have the start of a season that most Filipinos love…Pasko.
In these times, hygge becomes the blessing we eagerly look forward to the moment we get home. Or if we are in dire straits, hygge becomes the hope and aspiration that keep our hearts aflame to move forward.
Below are some ideas how we can make our homes give off this hygge vibe.
Cozy Environment

Create a comfortable and clean home where you can relax and breathe easy. It would be a plus if your walls are painted with neutral hues like the colors above. You can add a bright touch with a muted orange like Japonica to add warmth to the space.
Lighting is also important. Choose warm lights and not cool and harsh ones. We don’t use fireplaces in this country, so you can opt to light a candle or two. Just make sure you choose non-toxic ones like soy and beeswax, with plant-based essential oils if you want a scented one.
Simple Joys
Have you been in a situation when you want a day where you can relax and slow down and “just be”? When it is your intention to just listen to music, cook easy comfort food, stream a nice movie you had saved, continue with the next chapter of a book, or pick up where you left off with a hobby project, make sure you really do it. There may be many things that crop up that take you out of this intention, especially for those who are known to be capable and whom a lot of people rely on even for simple things. Just remember that you really need to also nurture yourself, even if it’s just to vegetate.
So create a comfortable corner in your home that’s just meant for you. It could even be just a corner of a sofa which already has the imprint of your body. In this space, celebrate tiny rituals like giving thanks for the little and simple joys in your life, or do your 4-7-8 breathing (inhale for 4, hold for 7, exhale for 8) for just a few minutes to calm your body and mind.
Connection with Others
I mentioned the 3 Cs associated with hygge—coziness, comfort, and contentment. However, there’s a fourth C that is also very important and that is connection with others.
Make some shared experiences with people you love like planning a movie or mahjong night at home, cooking a meal together, or having a casual get-together just shooting the breeze. In essence, it’s just to be with people you care about in a place that you cherish, doing things that you love to do together.
