Rust is the enemy of metal. When left untreated, rust spreads to more and more areas of your metal surface, eventually eating away at it. Soon enough, the metal may look so dilapidated that you’ll have no choice but to replace it entirely. Don’t let it get to this point. Treat rust thoroughly and repaint with a primer and topcoat that have reliable corrosion resistance.

Treating Rust on Metal Surfaces

Steel corrosion, more commonly called and known as rust, is the enemy of metal. It appears as an orange or red flaky coating on metal surfaces. Boysen experts advise that you be thorough with rust treatment. Rust will only come back or even worsen if you do not do a good enough job of removing or stabilizing it.

To treat rust at home, you will have to first manually remove the rust and then use a chemical treatment afterward. Follow these steps.

Step 1

With a steel brush and sandpaper, manually remove any rust you see by brushing and sanding the surface. Use a 120 to 140 grit sandpaper.

Step 2

With a rag, clean the area to remove any sanding dust and dirt on the surface.

Step 3

To the remaining rusted areas, apply Boysen Metal Etching Solution using a brush. Wait for 10 to 15 minutes to allow enough time for the solution to treat the rust. Repeat this step until no rust is left on the surface.

Step 4

Next, remove any Metal Etching Solution left on the surface. Do this by wiping thinner on the areas using a clean rag.

Step 5

Immediately apply primer to areas where rust treatment was carried out. This is to avoid flash rusting. Then, proceed with your chosen topcoat.
