Bathrooms are important to most, if not all, homeowners. After all, these function as places where we practice personal hygiene, waste disposal, and sanitation. But more than these practical functions, many of us want our bathrooms now to be a place for self-care and relaxation, a sanctuary from the world outside.

For many of us, a bathroom has to be clean, must have a good layout, must have enough storage capabilities, must be properly ventilated, must be well-lit with adjustable lighting that can change the ambience from cozy to bright, has enough hooks or towel racks, has plumbing that works, no drips, no grotty grout, sparkling…

Ric seems to have similar demands plus an additional one. He wants to recreate that resort or spa feeling. No worries, Jean’s got you, Ric.

The changes that Jean chose for the bathroom—tiling the panels of the bathtub and the wall beside it, tiling the shower area, partitioning off the shower and toilet area, and installing a cantilevered counter for the washbasins—require a professional.

If you want a boujee resort style spa bathroom, it would be difficult to keep everything all white like Ric’s original bathroom, and just make cosmetic changes like adding a candle or two.

Although colored bathroom fixtures are making a comeback, I personally prefer these to be white. But to each his own so do explore the colored tubs, basins, and toilet bowls if you want them.

Jean opts for a darker tile for the lower half of the wall adjacent to the bathtub, and the shower area as well. Then for the rest of the wall, she chooses a dark intense color called Unapologetic | BCT20-7734S from the Kinship palette of Boysen Color Trend 2020/21.

The cantilevered bathroom counter and the partition are stained with Boysen Oil Wood Stain Wallnut Half Tone | B-2700.

The Role of Bathrooms

Bathrooms are increasingly considered as wellness or self-care areas in the home, and not just a room for cleansing. Many homeowners now choose to give these spaces more thought. Many want the bathroom to become a personalized environment that is calm and rejuvenating, and that can improve both one’s physical and mental health.

From aromatherapy candles, bath salts, mood lighting, to saunas, steam showers, or jetted tubs, the possibilities for a discerning homeowner are numerous. It all depends on your taste, requirements, and budget.
