In this episode, home decorator hobbyist Jean makes a digital makeover of graphic designer Lou’s bedroom that could double as his studio. In his words, Lou wishes to transform his crash pad into a loft studio that offers him the space to start and finish all his projects. An additional wish is to be able to have a space to meet up with his artist friends in his bedroom/workspace.

For the walls
Lou wanted the walls repainted. Jean chose an off-white from the Boysen Permacoat Latex line called Queen Anne’s Lace | BCP-0558. To add interest, Jean added a visual wainscoting on the bottom third of the wall in a red color called Thimbleberry | BCT14-7740S. This beautiful red paint is from the Naturist palette of Boysen Color Trend 2015, which would add warmth to any space.
This painted wainscoting not only enhances the space but also provides protection from stains. In a bedroom that is supposed to double as a work studio, and “triple” as a meetup space for friends and colleagues, having a darker paint color on the lower third of the wall is a practical enhancement.
Boysen Permacoat Latex is a very durable, high-quality paint that can provide your walls great coverage for a couple of coats.
For the loft bed
To carve out more space for Lou’s requirements, Jean opted for a loft bed. It is also painted with Boysen Permacoat Latex in the color Mount Olive | BCP-0382. This deep gray green works well with the off-white walls and red wainscoting.
This line can also be used for wood surfaces, but just make sure that you prime the surface first with Boysen WoodPrime, an acrylic water-based primer designed for application onto interior wooden substrates. It is low in odor and is formulated to have better tannin resistance.
Loft beds are practical in the sense that you free up floor space underneath it. However, make sure that the person who will be using it is nimble and young like Lou. Don’t use this option for a senior who has mobility problems, or a young child who may not be able to use the bed safely.
Other important things to consider with a loft bed are:
- look into the ceiling height, there should be enough headroom for the bed space and the work space underneath it
- make sure that the material used for the bed is strong and durable
- add sturdy guardrails to prevent falls
- the height of the mattress should not exceed the height of the guard rails
- the ladder should be sturdy and safe for climbing, and properly secured
- weight requirements of both the mattress and the person using it are considered
- use metal frames or reinforcements for the stability of the bed
- be aware that this would be hotter if an air conditioner is not used (hot air rises)
- be aware that bed making may be a challenge.
Consider these things carefully for safety reasons.
For other wooden surfaces
The wooden tables, shelves, and bench near the window are protected with Boysen Xyladecor, a solvent-based, deep penetrating type of stain that combines decorative, water repellent, and wood preserving properties in one. It dries to a silk matte finish and emphasizes the grain, bringing out the natural beauty in any kind of wood.
The color Chestnut | BX-105 is used for the work space, while Colorless | BX-101 is used for the seating adjacent to the window, which can also be used as storage.
Lighting and accessories
Lighting is very important, especially for the work area so choose the task lighting wisely. Add also a reading lamp in the bed area. Ambient lighting would be good if you want a well-illuminated room when your guests are around. Layer it with mood lighting like floor or table lamps if you want to relax, with or without your friends.
Personalize your space with your artworks, a soft rug to define the sitting area, and an easy window treatment like the Roman shades (which are easy to take down and wash regularly).
