In this video, home decorator hobbyist Jean talks to her friend Simon to do a digital makeover of his family’s vacation rental in the mountains. Nature lovers like hikers are the usual clients.

When renovating a place like this, keep in mind that the most important feature of the house is the view. Nothing beats nature and showing it off is your primary mission. For this reason, Jean’s tips for the changes in the living space are restrained. It’s a case of showcasing the view while your guests settle themselves in very comfortable and cozy surroundings.

Since this is also a business, invest wisely by being savvy about the changes you will be making. Keep the guest profile front and center.

Recommended Boysen Products for the Digital Makeover

For the walls

Jean chose the Kavern finish from the Konstrukt Lunar Series. This is a faux cement textured finish that fits the rugged vibe of the vacation rental. Be aware though that the Konstrukt line is not a DIY product. You would need a trained painter to apply this product.

You can have the “bare cement” finish if that’s what you want. But you can also add a topcoat in a different color. Jean chose a dark gray called Midnight Magic | BCP-0508 from the Boysen Permacoat Latex line. This 100% acrylic paint has excellent hiding and outstanding durability, and can be used both for interior and exterior surfaces. You never know, you may want to repaint  the house on the outside too to match the lovely interior.

For the wooden surfaces

To amp up the wooden surfaces in the simple living room, Jean chose two excellent Boysen wood staining products—Xyladecor and Oil Wood Stain.

Bea Shows You The Differences Between the Boysen Wood Staining Products

Read this post to learn about the differences between these two products. There is also a video that would help you choose which product to get.

For the wooden surfaces in this vacation rental, Jean selected the following Boysen products:

  • Boysen Oil Wood Stain Maple | B-2705 for the ceiling wood beams
  • Boysen Oil Wood Stain Wallnut Full Tone | B-2700 for the stools
  • Xyladecor Chestnut | BX-105 for the wooden beams on the walls
  • Xyladecor Colorless | BX-101 for the wooden frame of the sofa
  • Xyladecor Mahogany | BX-107 for the wooden center table

You could choose just a couple of colors for the stains. However, the different five color stains add interest and a more complex visual texture to the room where the primary color is a dark gray.

Vacation Rental

As Jean said, the breathtaking view is a joy to behold. The fresh air is a wonderful respite from the urban smells. Add to that the natural sounds like the wind, birds, rustling of leaves, or crickets. I’m all in for NO TV!

For a rustic place like this, what you can do is to keep it simple and natural as much as you can. Keeping this in mind, the design tips that you can steal from this design makeover are:

  • Choose a neutral color for the surfaces.
  • Have a rope “railing” for the stairs as a safety barrier.
  • Add local hand-crafted accessories like woven pendant lamps, vintage-style bamboo roller shades for privacy, a wooden sofa frame with a durable upholstery in a subdued color like sage, a naturally-shaped coffee table, wooden stools, a beautiful woven rug that adds a little color to the space, and wall art. Throw in a few pillows and a throw, also in subtle colors.
  • Bring in some potted plants to bring nature in.
