Konstrukt Lunar Series is a collection of industrial, cement faux finishes which uses standard Konstrukt products. Konstrukt is a brand under Boysen which is solely dedicated to surface preparation—making your walls and other surfaces ready for the final touches of paint or other applications. The line consists of skimcoats, renders, tile adhesives, gypsum putties, and other products that you might need during your construction or renovation project. Long story short, we’ve actually come out with 9 different faux finishes using these surface preparatory products—Kavern, Koastal, Kaza, Koral, Korona, Kaiser, Kashmir, Kanyon, and Kohl—as the Konstrukt Lunar Series. For the first part of this nine part installation, we’ll start with Kavern.

What is Kavern?

Kavern is a finish that looks simple yet sophisticated, unpretentious but ultra-modern. The design isn’t too complicated so it wouldn’t look busy on your walls. It’s perfect if you want to make your living space look very industrial-chic, but not make it look too rigid. If you want to go the minimalist route, stick to the basic furniture in neutral and linear designs.

How to Prep Your Walls

Before you start, always make sure that the walls you’ll be applying on to is prepped properly. Remove any honeycomb and loose concrete. Check and repair all surface defects such as cracks or gaps with corrective civil works. Waterproof as necessary. Make sure to dust off any dirt and to dry the surface properly. Also, it’s always a good idea to do the project when the weather is great. A sunny day would help with the product’s cure time and would also be good for ventilation during the whole process. Keep in mind to apply these products over bare concrete.

How to Achieve the Kavern Faux Finish

Step 01
Stir Konstrukt Permaplast K-202 High-Performance Acrylic Render by using a mechanical mixing device to make sure that the product is lump-free and has the proper consistency.

Step 02
Transfer the mixture into a clean bucket and mix in cement using a ratio depending on the wanted outcome. Take note that the color of the mixture may vary depending on the brand and ratio of cement. If you want something lighter, use lighter-colored cement. If you’re looking for a darker shade, use a darker-colored cement. You can also mix two types of colored cement to get the shade you want! Just make sure to use a mechanical device to blend the mixture together to ensure proper mixing.

Step 03
Apply a thin layer of the mixture on the surface by pressing the edge of a steel trowel or a rubber float firmly on the concrete surface until all areas are covered.

Step 04
Before the coating completely dries, prevent cracks by placing a fiber mesh over the applied mixture as a reinforcing membrane. Then, apply another layer of the mixture onto the surface while making sure that the thickness of the applied coating is between 3mm to 5mm.

Step 05
Spread the mixture evenly using either a plastic or a steel trowel to prevent any unwanted marks and to achieve the desired stucco texture. Allow the product to cure for at least 7 days (depending on weather conditions) before paint application. There is no need to neutralize the surface.

Step 06
The Konstrukt line of products are formulated for surface preparation use. To protect the finish you just created, it’s important to coat it with additional layers of protection. This is to help hold it up against the usual wear and tear from everyday living.

How to Protect Your Kavern Finish

If you want to retain the “bare cement” look of Kavern, apply a coat of Boysen Acrytex Sealer B-1708 on the surface and let it dry for at least 2 hours before applying 2 coats of Boysen Matte Shield B-4600 (with 2 hours dry time in between coats). It’s best to apply these products using a spray to prevent lap marks from appearing on the surface. But, if that’s not an option, always make sure to swipe off any excess product from your roller before applying the coating thinly on the surface.

if you want to paint the Kavern-finished wall, use a system of 1 coat primer (like Boysen Permacoat Flat Latex White B-701) and 2 coats of any colored water-based topcoat.
