In this video, Jean redecorates a lanai of homeowner Mae who describes herself as a stay-at-home mom, plantita, and bookworm. Watch it to see how Jean restyles the lanai from its present incarnation as a storage area to a breezy space for relaxing and entertaining.
A lanai blurs the lines between indoors and outdoors. It’s a great space to spend quality me time to rest and restore your energy. But it’s also a wonderful space for some laid-back entertaining.
Recommended Boysen Products for the Digital Makeover
Before starting any painting work in any space, keep in mind that it’s best to empty the room and clean it. Include all surfaces—walls, floor, ceiling, glass doors, and grills.

Jean chose a monochromatic color scheme for this room using ivory, taupe, and brown for a warm and natural feel. Wicker and rattan furniture add to the cozy and rustic charm of the lanai. So does the beige sisal rug.
The room may be bathed in light during the day, but for the times when the family wants to use the lanai at night, track lights are installed overhead. I suggest you add some accent lighting like a beautiful floor lamp near the sofa. This could serve as a reading light should the bookworm not be able to put off poring over a whodunit book late into the night.
For the concrete walls
Jean chose a warm light neutral called Oak Tone | BCP-0217 from the Boysen Permacoat Latex line to coat the walls. Oak Tone is a beautiful light taupe, a very calming neutral that can ground a room and that can be paired well with a wide range of other colors.
Boysen Permacoat Latex is a 100% acrylic paint that has excellent hiding and outstanding durability.
For the wainscoting
Jean adds a wooden wainscoting on one wall as an interesting feature to the room. The rule of thumb is to install the wainscoting on the bottom third of the wall. This wooden feature is coated with Boysen Quick Drying Enamel in the color Ivory | B-621. It is a deep yellow that has a brown undertone, which goes very well with the taupe color of the wall above it.
Boysen Quick Drying Enamel provides substantial durability. It is an alkyd-type paint for wood surfaces that is formulated to give a tough and beautiful finish. This makes it the ideal product for the wooden wainscoting.
The cap molding that runs along the top edge of the wainscoting is stained with Boysen Xyladecor Teak | BX-103. Boysen Xyladecor is a solvent-based, deep penetrating type of stain that combines decorative, water repellent, and wood preserving properties in one. This product also prevents the growth of mold and fungi.
For the wooden beams
Decorative wooden beams were installed on the ceiling to add warmth, character, and visual interest to the space. These are also coated in Boysen Xyladecor Teak | BX-103.
For the side table
The rattan side table is stained with a different color, Boysen Xyladecor Chestnut | BX-105.
Different brown tones from the many elements in the room add to visual variety, and make the lanai look more appealing.
Lanai Living
Lanai is one of the types of exterior domestic spaces. It is situated on the ground floor, adjacent to the house, and built with a concrete foundation. It has a roof and can be enclosed on the sides or left open. With the mosquitoes and other insects in our tropical country, enclosing the space with screens, windows, and doors (glass doors are ideal) may be best, especially if you have kids.
Lanais are good additions to homes. You can enjoy the outdoors whether it’s sunny or raining. If you have one, count yourself one of the lucky ones.
