What is a Skimcoat?

Issues like honeycombs, bubbles, cracks, and waviness and plumbness are defects that a concrete can have. They certainly won’t look good even with the coating of paint. This is why a skimcoat is used to correct such surface imperfections.
A skimcoat is similar to plaster in a way that it’s applied using a trowel but gives a cementitious finish when used. Using a skimcoat is an alternative to neutralizing the surface for new concrete, in that you can apply your primer after it has properly cured. The act of applying skimcoat on a surface is called pagpapalitada in Filipino—you may hear the phrase when working with masons or painters.
Don’t confuse skimcoat with putty, even if both are used to correct imperfections. The former is a way to prepare the surface before painting. Only use it on bare concrete. The latter is applied after putting on the primer of your choice of paint, or may be applied on surfaces with already existing paint.
