Konstrukt is the go-to brand for surface preparation products like skimcoats and renders. But, did you know that these same products can also be applied for a modern concrete look? We’ve recently launched the Konstrukt Lunar Series.  It’s a collection of 9 cement faux finishes that uses standard Konstrukt products. You can read up on the other finishes we’ve featured here. For this post, let’s talk about the Kashmir Finish.

What is Kashmir?

Kashmir is the glossier cousin of Kaiser. This look is finished off with a clear coat that lends a polished sheen onto the surface. Not only is it silky smooth to the touch, but its slight sheen also makes it a good accent wall on spaces where you might want to entertain guests. The Kashmir finish looks great in living areas and offices.

Fun Fact: This finish is actually used in the Boysen Headquarters’ executive lobby. Our designer used a lot of colorful elements for the space such as the fun BOYSEN installation and the blue and orange couches.  Using the Kashmir finish ties together all these pops of color without making the space look too cluttered.

Like the Kaiser Finish, Kashmir is technically the step before the usual painting process begins. You can easily paint a portion of the Kashmir Finish to add a burst of color in the space. The important step to take note here is to sand the Kashmir Finish lightly to help the paint adhere to the substrate. Then, apply a coat of primer and 2 coats of your preferred water-based paint.

Working with Konstrukt products might be a tad bit trickier than applying normal latex paint. We recommend to seek the help of a seasoned or trained professional for these types of projects.

The Project Checklist

To recreate this look, you’ll need the following products:

  1. Konstrukt Permaplast K-201 High-Performance Acrylic Skimcoat
  2. Cement (Ordinary Portland Cement or White Cement)

To protect your finish, you have the following options:

  1. Boysen Acrytex Clear Coat B-1700
  2. Boysen Acrytex Sealer B-1708
  3. Boysen Acrytex Reducer (for thinning and cleaning purposes)

Aside from the usual renovation items like rags and ladders, you’ll need these as well:

Prep the Surface

Ensure smooth sailing during your project by properly prepping the surface. Remove any honeycomb and loose concrete. Check and repair all surface defects such as cracks or gaps with corrective civil works. Waterproof as necessary. Make sure to dust off any dirt and to dry the surface.

Also, try to schedule this project when the weather is nice and sunny. Not only does this help the product cure properly, but it’s also great for ventilation for when you’re immersed in the renovation. Take note that these products should be applied over bare concrete.

How to Achieve the Kashmir Finish

Step 01: Use a mechanical mixing device to stir Konstrukt Permaplast K-201 High-Performance Skimcoat until it’s free from any lumps.

Step 02: Transfer the mixture into a clean container and mix in cement using a ratio depending on the wanted outcome. Use the mixing device again to make sure it’s blended well. The color of the mixture will vary depending on the brand and ratio of cement used.

Step 03: Apply a thin layer of the mixture on the surface by pressing the edge of the steel trowel firmly on the concrete until all areas are covered. Let the applied mixture dry for at least an hour before applying the second coat.

Step 04: The succeeding coat should be applied in random strokes to achieve a cement finish. Do the same process for the third coat, if necessary. Let it cure for at least 7 days before applying any other product. There is no need to sand nor neutralize the surface. Sanding the surface may result in obvious sanding marks on your final surface.

Protect your Kashmir Finish

Always remember that the products used for the Kashmir Finish (or any finish from the Konstrukt Lunar Series, for that matter) are meant for surface preparation prior to painting. To preserve the cement finish with a modern look, apply a coat of Boysen Acrytex Sealer B-1708 after letting the finish cure for at least a week. Let the sealer dry for 2 hours before applying 2 coats of Boysen Acrytex Clear Coat B-1700 (with 2 hours dry time in between coats).

Use a spray if you have it. It’s the best option in applying these finishing products. But if that’s not available, just make sure to swipe off any excess clear coat from the roller onto the paint tray. Apply the product thinly on the surface to prevent any visible roller marks.
