Konstrukt Lunar Series is a collection of 9 cement faux finishes that uses standard Konstrukt products. Yes, you read that right! While Konstrukt is known for its surface preparation products such as skimcoats and renders, the same products can actually be used to create decorative finishes for that modern concrete look as well! We’ve already featured several finishes in the blog in previous posts. But for this one, the Kaiser Finish will take center stage.

What is the Kaiser Finish?

Designed to have a smooth, low luster facade, the Kaiser finish is what usually comes to mind when someone thinks about the industrial aesthetic. The epitome of the modern concrete look. It’s the type of finish that you can’t help but run your hands over because of how silky smooth it feels. It’s also coated with a protective matte film that lessens light reflectance off the walls.

The application of Konstrukt products might be a little bit trickier than just working with normal latex paint. It’s advisable to seek the help of a seasoned or trained profession for this type of project.

Pro Tip: The Kaiser finish is actually the step right before the usual painting process. So let’s say in a few months or years you decide to add a pop of color in your living space. Just sand the Kaiser finish lightly to help the paint stick onto the surface. Apply a coat of primer and 2 coats of your preferred water-based topcoat and you’re good to go!

The Project Checklist

To recreate this look, you’ll need the following products:

  1. Konstrukt Permaplast K-201 High-Performance Acrylic Skimcoat
  2. Cement (Ordinary Portland Cement and White Cement)

To protect your finish, you have the following options:

  1. Boysen Matte Shield B-4600
  2. Boysen Acrytex Sealer B-1708

Aside from the usual renovation items like rags and ladders, you’ll need these as well:

Prep the Surface

For a fuss-free project, make sure that the walls you’ll be working on are prepped properly. Remove any honeycomb and loose concrete. Check and repair all surface defects such as cracks or gaps with corrective civil works. Waterproof as necessary. Make sure to dust off any dirt and that the surface is dry.

Also, it’s always a good idea to do the project when the weather is great. It helps with the product’s cure time and it’s good for ventilation during the whole process. Always remember that these products should be applied over bare concrete.

How to Achieve the Kaiser Finish

Step 01: Stir Konstrukt Permaplast K-201 High-Performance Skimcoat with a mechanical mixing device to make sure that the product is free from any clumps.

Step 02: Transfer the mixture into a clean container and mix in cement using a ratio depending on the wanted outcome. Use the mixing device again to make sure it’s well blended. The color of the mixture will vary depending on the brand and ratio of cement used.

Step 03: Apply a thin layer of the mixture on the surface by pressing the edge of the steel trowel firmly on the concrete until all areas are covered.

Step 04: Let the applied mixture dry for at least an hour before applying the second coat. Using a stainless steel trowel, apply the succeeding coat in random strokes to achieve a cement finish.  Do the same process for the third coat, if necessary. Let dry for at least an hour before polishing the surface.

Step 05: Wait for at least 7 days curing time before putting any other product on the surface. There is no need to sand or neutralize the surface. However, should the need to sand the surface be necessary, use a very fine variant of sand paper to prevent jarring sanding marks on your finish.

Protect your Kaiser Finish

What’s great about the Kaiser Finish is that it can be recreated in both interior and exterior spaces. Want to get the look in your outdoor lanai? No problem. But, always remember that these kinds of finishes should be protected from any wear and tear, especially if it’s situated outside! Help preserve your finish by applying a coat of BOYSEN Acrytex Sealer B-1708. Let the sealer dry for at least 2 hours. Afterwards, apply 2 coats of Boysen Matte Shield B-4600 (wait for 2 hours in between coats).

It’s best to apply these products by using a spray to avoid lap marks. But if that’s not available, just make sure to swipe off excess product from your roller onto the paint tray. Apply the product thinly on the surface to prevent roller marks.
