If we were ever to complain about solvent-based paints, it would have something to do with the strong chemical smell they give off. Water-based paints are, simply, sometimes more convenient because they’re less odorous. And so, we present to you Boysen WoodPrime!

What is Boysen WoodPrime

Boysen WoodPrime | MyBoysen

Boysen WoodPrime is a water-based primer for wood. The main advantage of having a wood primer that’s water-based is that it’s low-odor and you can use a water-based paint product as a topcoat such as Boysen Permacoat Latex and Boysen Healthy Home.

Take note, however, that it’s best to only apply Boysen WoodPrime on interior low-touch surfaces such as trims, moldings, and baseboards. It may not stand up well on high-touch surfaces like kitchen cabinets, cupboards, and shelves.

When and Where to Use Boysen WoodPrime

Solvent-based paints will often have a strong chemical smell. It can be bothersome especially when you’re painting indoors and in rooms with little ventilation.

Paint products for wood, like Boysen Flatwall Enamel (primer) and Boysen Quick Drying Enamel (topcoat), are typically solvent-based because they need to be able to withstand everyday use such as when they’re applied on cabinets, shelves, and other furniture.

If you’re only painting interior low-touch surfaces, it’s good to know that you have a water-based option for your primer—Boysen WoodPrime. And then after, you can also top it with a water-based topcoat like Permacoat Latex. No need to work with solvent-based paints.

Interior low-touch surfaces will include decorative wall and ceiling paneling such as trimming, wainscoting, molding, and baseboards among others.

How to Use Boysen WoodPrime

First, prep your wooden surface. If it’s unpainted, sand then wipe away the dust. If you’re repainting, check the condition of the existing paint first. If it’s in good condition, lightly sand. If it’s in bad shape, scrape to bare then sand until smooth. Once this is done, you can move on to your primer, Boysen WoodPrime. Stir the paint in the container thoroughly, then apply it to your prepped wooden surface.

Boysen WoodPrime is formulated to have reliable tannin-stain resistance. Upon initial application, a tannin stain may still occur for some species of wood but that’s okay. Reapply after 24 hours and this will stop the tannin from transferring to the topcoat.

Wait for another 24 hours before using Boysen Masonry Putty to fill hairline cracks and surface imperfections.
