Perfect bare walls are rare. That’s why you need putty to correct surface imperfections like hairline cracks and small holes. Ready-to-use putties are typically the go-to, but experienced painters may opt for job site-mixed putty. Boysen Patching Compound is an example. Here’s what you need to know about it.
What is Boysen Patching Compound
Heard of job-site mixed putty? Seasoned and experienced painters will sometimes mix their own putty on-site. They do this by taking construction aggregate materials, like perlite, and mixing it with white paint. This produces a thick, almost clay-like, mixture that is then used to fill minor imperfections.
Boysen does not carry perlite. It does, however, have Boysen Patching Compound which is very similar in use and purpose.
Boysen Patching Compound is a powder-type material that is combined with latex paint to make job site-mixed putty. Once it’s mixed with paint, just like putty, it can be used to patch holes and other minor surface imperfections like hairline cracks.
When and How to Use Boysen Patching Compound
If you’re looking to use aggregates to make job site-mixed putty, consider Boysen Patching Compound instead as it can be much easier to use. This is primarily because it already has a set recommended ratio of 1-1.5 kg of Patching Compound to latex paint. So, if you want to mix your own putty, it takes the guesswork out of the process.
Boysen Engineers recommend mixing Boysen Patching Compound with Boysen Permacoat Latex Flat White. Remember that the putty you create is for use on surface imperfections that are only up to 1mm. Use it on interior concrete and drywall substrates only as well.
Apply your Patching Compound mixture after you’ve primed your wall. Let it dry for 2 hours, then spot prime where you’ve puttied. Once this is dry, you can water-based topcoat of your choice such as Boysen Permacoat Latex, Boysen Healthy Home, or Virtuoso Silk Touch.
Can You Mix Boysen Patching Compound with Other Products
To reiterate, Boysen Patching Compound is made to be mixed with latex paint, specifically Boysen Permacoat Latex Flat White to make job site-mixed putty. It’s best not to mix it with anything else other than what’s recommended.
Some wrongly assume that Patching Compound can be mixed with Boysen Acrytex Cast to thicken the latter and allow it to correct imperfections more than 1mm in thickness. Again, this is not recommended.
If you are looking to correct imperfections on your concrete surface that are more than 1 mm in thickness, turn to skimcoat instead. Konstrukt Permaplast K-201 High-Performance Acrylic Skimcoat, for example, fixes wall imperfections that are 1mm to 3mm thick. Skimcoat will also help minimize the use of putty afterward.
