We’ve gotten a lot of inquiries on our social media platforms asking about what paints to use for a pickleball court. It is a very popular pastime nowadays. Check out what Lettie has to recommend for those who want to create spaces for sports and recreation.

Dear Lettie,

I want to convert my backyard into a pickleball court. My kids and I go to the court nearest to us almost every day, but I think it’s more convenient if we just have one place in our house where we can enjoy playing. I’m a loyal Boysen user, and I was wondering what paint I should use for the floor of the court.

Thanks!

From,

Pickleball-Enjoying Boysen User

Dear Pickleball-Enjoying Boysen User,

First of all, thank you for putting your trust in Boysen products!

And we would love to help you out as you create a pickleball court in your home. Painting your backyard, assuming it’s already cemented over, is certainly one way to keep your family active and moving.

What Paints to Use for a Pickleball Court

For your backyard renovation project, I would recommend Boysen Acqua Epoxy. You can also have Boysen Epoxy Enamel as an option if your backyard has a roofing.  These are Boysen’s paint products that are the best for a home pickleball court.

When choosing paint products for floorings, you have to keep in mind that it needs much better abrasion- and weather-resistance than what’s normally needed in paints for walls. Especially for a sports area, the coating you’ll use needs to be really good against foot traffic. Epoxy paints offers this kind of durable coating. It’s actually the best Boysen product for any type of sports court. If your family gets into basketball or volleyball soon, you can also use these paints to accommodate your hobbies.

On that note, I should also emphasize that a floor coated with epoxy paint can get really slippery when wet. Not that you’ll use a pickleball court when wet, but it’s important that you mop up your court first when needed. With these paints, you also coat a floor that makes it easy to clean up stains and spills.

Reminders When Using Epoxy Paints

While you have Acqua Epoxy and Epoxy Enamel as options, it’s important to remember that Acqua Epoxy is formulated with better exterior durability. Its UV-resistance makes it better for open spaces, making it appropriate for a pickleball court. Of course, you can still use Epoxy Enamel in closed sports spaces. It is still good against stains and abrasions, maintaining its gloss finish.

Be mindful that epoxy paint is a two-component system. Both the topcoat and its primer, Boysen Epoxy Primer, needs to be mixed with its catalyst with a 3:1 ratio.

For the primer, wait 20 minutes of induction time. After it has cured, thin with Boysen Epoxy Reducer with a 1:1 ratio. This is for better workability.

Wait overnight as it dries, then proceed to apply the first coat of your chosen topcoat color. For subsequent coats, wait for at least 8 hours or overnight. Around 2–3 coats should suffice for the floor of a court.

Epoxy Enamel has a pot life of 5 hours, while Acqua Epoxy gels when not used within 24 hours.
