It seemed like in just a matter of days, the cool air from December to January changed to the hot breeze in mid-February. Now that we are in March, and in what is officially considered as summer in the Philippines, the heat while still bearable is climbing just as humidity is.
In other parts of the world, people are welcoming spring. Daylight Saving Time began on March 9, and clocks “sprung forward” an hour, When I remember my life far away from here, I feel nostalgic about the season spring because it seemed like life awakened after the deep slumber of winter. Smells seemed “greener” when plants pushed out of the earth and flowers bloomed.
Here’s a video we made years ago that shows that colorful magic.
Back to Summer
Being in the tropics, we don’t have spring, But we do have summer which carries its own magic.
The hot sun just bakes everything in sight, including my spring nostalgia which dissolves in the heat. Colors just become so much more intense. Maybe this is the reason why Pinoys are such a lively, vibrant bunch of people with ready smiles, and a spirit that responds wholeheartedly to music.
We’ve come up with four palettes from light to dark. Pick a palette that best fits your personality, and use it with confidence.
Light White
The primary color in this room, including the walls and white light-filtering curtains, is an off-white color called Sugar Dust. Add verdant touches with indoor plants, a wicker chair, a pillow with the most adorable nubs, and you’ve got the perfect combination for a corner that invites you to relax.
For me, this is such a winning combination because it’s laid-back and very appealing in its familiarity. Fill it with your personality and your happy core memories with tips from this article about sentimental design.
Pale Pastels
Borrow this combination for your home exteriors, or for your interiors. Cool Sky is, as its name says, cool with its very light blue tone that dials down the visual heat factor. I know many Filipinos like this neon green/brat green/chartreuse for their buildings and homes, but do try this Dillard’s Blue, because it’s very restful for the eyes, which is very helpful when the sun is beating down. Rotunda Gold may be a warm color but because of its brown tinge, it is more subtle than Yellow Ware in the post Cheerio Yellow: Sunshine Hues for Exteriors.
Give this combination a chance if you want to move away from the ubiquitous whites, beiges, ochres, and siennas, and if you think that 2025 is the time to try something new.
Bold and Bright
For the fearless who have no qualms about diving into the deep end, this bold and bright palette is for you. Vivacious types should have no problems with reaching for these vivid colors. Mirror your external world with your inner state and just wholeheartedly embrace your fiesta heart in the most precious space—your home.
We’ve got more palettes with saturated colors. Just surf through the Boysen Color Trend website and find a combination that appeals more to you. Do check out the palettes from 2015 to the latest one.
In the Shadows
I’m no shrinking violet, but sometimes the heat and humidity really get to me. When that happens, I want to rush into my bat cave and wilt.
Now, if you want to droop in serene splendor, this color combination is just for you. Its violet monochromatic colors emanate a silent luxury. What better place to recover from a hot Philippine summer day?
