A potential Boysen Cool Shades user thinks of applying a midcoat of a different product to prevent the primer from bleeding over. Lettie responds with a clarification on this idea.

Dear Lettie,

I want to paint my roof with Boysen Cool Shades, priming first with Boysen Red Oxide Metal Primer.

I might also purchase Boysen Roofgard Laguna White as a midcoat, in case the red oxide primer might bleed over the Cool Shades topcoat.

Is that a good idea? Thanks for the response.

From,

Prospective Boysen Cool Shades User

Dear Prospective Boysen Cool Shades User,

Thank you for your inquiry! Your plan to paint your roof with Boysen Cool Shades is a good idea because its heat-reflecting formulation can help create cooler interiors.

From what I understand, you plan to paint with Cool Shades through this painting schedule: Boysen Red Oxide Metal Primer as primer, Boysen Roofgard Laguna White as an intermediate coat, then Boysen Cool Shades as your topcoat.

Now, this is technically feasible. You won’t get any adverse reactions when following this painting system. HOWEVER, I would discourage you from using an intermediate coat and follow instead the painting schedule for Boysen Cool Shades.

This is because Boysen Cool Shades already has good hiding. This means it is enough to paint over the primer, and its red color won’t bleed out. As long as you apply the minimum of two topcoats, you can get the beautiful, clean white finish for your roof. There’s no need to use another product as an intermediate coat. Sayang naman, if ever.

Choosing Primers for Boysen Cool Shades

If you are painting new galvanized iron, stainless steel or aluminum, you can prime your roofs instead with Boysen Primeguard, specifically Primeguard White.

If you want to maximize the cooling effect of Boysen Cool Shades, it’s optimal to use a white-colored primer. Boysen Primeguard is also useful if you are looking for a water-based primer. Its low-odor and easy-cleanup properties may be preferable for your roof-painting projects. Though take note that you can’t use Boysen Primeguard for metals with existing rust.

If you are repainting roofs, stick to Boysen Red Oxide Metal Primer. You also have Boysen Gray Alkyd Metal Primer as an option. Both are good metal primers when repainting to prevent further corrosion of your metal sheets.

What’s important is to not include any unnecessary products for your projects. Again, Boysen roof paints have good hiding. Whichever color you use for your topcoat and primer, following the painting schedule ensures you have an even, smooth finish for your roof.

I hope this thoroughly answers your inquiry. Good luck with your painting project, Prospective Boysen Cool Shades User!

Lettie
