Eating. A favorite Filipino pastime. Even if we don’t have much food, we still share. In fact, kain na po tayo can even function as saying hello sometimes.
Eating is a social event for most of us. It’s a ritual that we treasure. We share, not only food, but lively conversations about anything and everything. That’s what makes meal times so nurturing, pleasurable, and healthy in both body and spirit.
So, it’s not surprising that a dining room, or a comedor, finds its way into our moodboard series.
Comedor Comfort
If you have the space and a big family, nuclear and extended, or if you’re just the social type who love to have friends drop by, consider making a big dining room and/or an eat-in kitchen.
What’s great about making a moodboard is that the only constraints we have are the ones in our minds. When making a vision board, dream big. Since we are not limited by space or ideas, here’s what we came up with—a big Mediterranean style comedor.
The dining room shown here is not a strange one to have in our part of the world. We’ve got centuries of Spanish influence and even today, we still see dining rooms built this way.
Elegant arches, a vaulted ceiling, dark wooden beams, limestone, wrought iron accessories, traditional and handmade cement tiles, wood furniture, and concrete—all these details you will find in the moodboard.
Colors Found in the Moodboard
The Italian and Spanish coastal towns, as well as the Greek islands, reflect this color palette. Inspirations for these colors are the blues from the sea, yellow from citrus plants, and pink from swathes of cascading bougainvillea. White is the perfect backdrop for these vibrant colors.
We’ve added the paint names and codes of the colors so that you can choose which ones to use on your walls.
Adding wood elements provide a warmth to this dining room. We’ve chosen Boysen Xyladecor in the color Pine to stain the wood to a silk matte finish. Xyladecor is a decorative, water-repelling, and wood-preserving, solvent-based, deep penetrating type of stain that brings out the beauty in any kind of wood.
As for the walls, we’ve got the cement faux finish of Kashmir to give this space a modern spin to a traditional and classical look. Kashmir belongs to the Konstrukt Lunar Series, which contains nine faux cement finishes that keeps gaining popularity since its introduction several years ago.
Dining in Style
This comedor is perfect for everyday family meals or a sit-down formal dinner, and anything in between. The space is both cozy and elegant, and, more importantly, versatile enough to welcome any kind of gathering.
Filipinos consider mealtimes as a respected tradition. We think of sharing bread (or more aptly, rice) as a protected space for family bonding and social connection, and for building trust, as well.
