Thinners and reducers are necessary components in your painting projects. They serve as the designated clean-up solvent for stains and spills. When mixed with their respective product, these are also used to reduce the viscosity of the paint for easier workability. For a stress-free project, use these products correctly or you might encounter these painting problems.

You may hear painters say this term when a paint has been heavily reduced. These paints do not adhere on surfaces well because the paint has lost so much body.

REMEDY: Follow the recommended ratio (or don’t thin at all!)
Most of the time, products are used as supplied, meaning they do not need to be reduced. This usually applies to water-based paints. Though if you really want to thin products like Boysen Permacoat Latex or Boysen Roofgard, you can reduce viscosity by mixing in no more than 1/2 liter of clean water (emphasis on clean) for every 4 liters of paint. The same principle of following the recommended ratio applies to other products that need reduction like Boysen Epoxy Primer when painting on concrete floors.

Poor or Inconsistent Finishes
While you can encounter different problems when using an excessive amount of reducer, you can also have difficulty when you don’t use them at all. For instance, getting a textured finish of Boysen Acrytex Cast can be effectively achieved using a spray gun. For the paint to flow properly through the nozzle, the paint needs to be thinned using Boysen Acrytex Reducer.
Lacquer products like Boysen Automotive Lacquer for a duco finish are also applied using a spray gun for a more consistent application. For this, use Boysen Lacquer Thinner with a ratio of 1:1. You can use the same thinning product for Boysen Lacquer Products for a transparent finish, mixing a thinner depending on how viscous you want the clear coat needs to be.
REMEDY: Use a thinner in the correct ratio.
It’s always worth reiterating to follow the correct ratio of paint to reducer. Better workability is important to prevent inconsistent finishes. Especially for a clean finish, it’s better to avoid problems brought by poor application.

Gelling
Just because its name is Boysen Paint Thinner doesn’t mean you can mix it with Acrytex or Epoxy Paints. Adding incompatible products to a paint causes it to gel rendering it unusable. Sayang naman.
