In 1917, Piet Mondrian co-founded with fellow artist Theo van Doesberg the De Stijl (“The Style”), a Dutch art movement that is also known as neoplasticism. It is a pared-down aesthetic that centered on a strict geometry of straight vertical and horizontal lines, the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue, and the neutrals black, white, and gray.

Piet Mondrian Inspired Interior Design
The grid and primary colors is such an iconic style, and has been reinterpreted in so many ways, from interiors to furniture. Next time you see it, remember the name Piet Mondrian.
Interior designers make a statement with this style and create a lot of impact in a space. This can be used in the front entryway, living room, dining room, kitchen, bathrooms, and in other rooms in the house. This would even look good in a child’s bedroom because of its bright color palette.
Living Room
This style would look great in a living room. The bright colors would create that kind of upbeat ambience that would fit in this social space.

Interpretation of Mondrian’s Style in Furniture
Gerrit Rietveld interpreted the Mondrian style in his Red and Blue Chair, where he had a translated line from the poem “The Aesthetic” written by German poet and writer Christian Morgenstern incised in the underside of the chair, “When I sit, I do not want to sit as my seated flesh likes, but rather as my seated spirit would sit, if it wove the chair for itself.”
Rietveld’s design philosophy: He used the poetic sentiment to express that furniture should accommodate the active, conscious mind (“seated spirit”) rather than just physical laziness or physical comfort (“seated flesh”). (Ondine Karpinellison)
