Using the wrong products can lead to disastrous results. Problems that can arise from it, like the dreaded paint incompatibility, are often times stressful, costly, and time-consuming. Avoid it before it happens. Here are essential tips to know for choosing the right products for any paint project.
Know Your Project
Before anything else, you’ll need to know the details about the project you’re working on. The most basic of these include:
- the type of surface you’ll be painting (concrete, metal, wood, etc.)
- what you’ll be painting (wall, floor, roof, gate, etc.)
- the condition of the surface (bare or repaint)
- if the surface will be exposed to the outdoors (interior or exterior painting)
- if you’ll need waterproofing
Getting to know the details of your project will help you figure out what you want the final outcome to be. That end goal in mind will lead you to the products that will help you achieve it.
Know Your Product
After you’ve familiarized yourself on the details of your project, next is to do your research on possible products that would be right for the job.
For example, if your project is for repainting a concrete wall, find products that are manufactured for that surface. Get to know each of those products’ features. This will include qualities like long-term durability, good water resistance, low odor, and more.
Ask yourself which of these qualities fit your needs best. Water resistance, for example, is useful to have for exterior concrete walls exposed to rain but may be unnecessary for interior room walls. Then, consider the products with those features as your best option.
Remember, if you’re going to use different products for one project (primer, putty, topcoat, etc.), make sure those products are compatible with each other as well. Checking a product’s painting schedule is key.
