Chances are you’ve heard the phrase “hit the ground running,” which could mean embracing new projects (also the new year) with full-on energy and enthusiasm, among other things. It was a phrase bandied about during my time at corporate, together with the widely revered multi-tasking and those KPIs (key performance indicators) that measure our worth. After living with those metrics for decades, I will posit that in 2025, embracing calmness is a much better way to live our lives.

I’m really loving the ethos of grounding that Pantone has attributed to Mocha Mousse, its color of the year for 2025. The attraction to connection, comfort, and harmony is not something new. We all have been drawn to these at certain points in our lives, and at certain points in our history. It’s good though to have this notion expressed so that we can strive to cultivate all these three to permeate our daily lives. And what better way than to have this spirit of rest and renewal in that one place we come back to—our homes.

For our homes, I suggest we use color psychology and use hues that would evoke the mood of calmness. Here are three that I’ve borrowed unashamedly from nature, each with its matching light neutral color.

Brown for Grounding

Enough has been said by Pantone about brown. It’s a classic color used in many homes for many decades now. It’s a warm and natural color that is restful to the eyes. While it’s perfect for days of cocooning and quiet contentment, it can also exude luxury and richness which can be an ideal backdrop for those times when you are entertaining and connecting with guests.

Blue for Serenity

Blue speaks of serenity and calmness. Many an interior designer consider blue a perfect choice. It’s a color that creates a serene sanctuary and also revitalizes it. That’s how versatile this color is; it can be both calming and reenergizing.

Pair it with metallics for a luxe feel, or wood for an organic one. The classic blue and white combination can either be casual or elegant. The effect really depends on how you use the color combinations, as well as the furniture and accessories you use with it.

Green for Balance

We have so many posts in this blog that talk about the color green. It’s the color of plants, forests, and meadows—spaces that nourish, reinvigorate, and bring us back into balance. In biophilic design, we are encouraged to bring plants into our homes but if we can’t, painting the walls green can help bring that peaceful atmosphere into our living spaces.
