For those who want the edgy yet sophisticated style enabled by bare concrete, consider the Konstrukt Lunar Series line. These are systems of finishes that utilize Konstrukt and Boysen products to give stylish textures to your home. It’s important to know that Konstrukt finishes utilize cement, skimcoat or renders. The resulting colors of these finishes are usually grey. For those who still want color and not just the texture, most Konstrukt finishes can be painted over with a water-based paint. Or in the case of the Korona finish, you can tint Boysen Matte Shield, a protective topcoat, for a colored finish.
How to Tint Boysen Matte Shield for the Konstrukt Lunar Series Korona Finish
Before getting that colorful Korona finish, you first need to achieve the textured finish itself. You can find the full guide here. Click the link below for a simple refresher.
Step 01: Mix a gallon of K-210 2K Skimcoat Part A (liquid) and 8 Liters of fresh water in a clean plastic or aluminum container. Divide the contents into two containers after thorough mixing.
Step 02: Pour the 28 kilogram bag of K-210 2K Skimcoat Part B (powder) into both containers in equal parts. Stir both mixtures separately using a mixing device until they’re free of lumps. No other material should be added into the mixture. The mixture can be used within a 1 to 2 hour working time.
Step 03: Apply the mixture thinly on the surface by pressing the edge of the steel trowel firmly on the concrete until all areas are covered. Let the first coat dry for at least an hour before applying the second coat. Let the second coat dry for another hour before applying the third coat.
Step 04: For the final coat, apply the mixture in arbitrary strokes to achieve your desired look. No need to neutralize the surface. Let the application cure for at least 7 days before applying a protective coat over the design.
Applying a Colored Protective Finish
Applying the protective coat is how you can create color for the Korona finish. Note that for the color to pop out the best, you would have to use an off-white of the powder component of K-210.
With the exception of Hansa Yellow and Toluidine Red, you can choose from the colorant options of Boysen Latex Colors. Mix your choice with Boysen Matte Shield, following the 1:16 ratio. Only up to 1/4 of the colorant can be mixed with every 4 liters of Matte Shield.
Apply the tinted Matte Shield using brush or roller on the textured surface. You may also use a sponge for a more faded look. The topcoat will dry for up to two hours.
You can see the difference between the Korona finish using a clear Matte Shield versus one that’s tinted with Latex Colors. It brings a totally different vibe to your space.
