Hello, Lettie.

I want to paint our roof with Boysen Cool Shades. For primer, I already have Boysen Epoxy Primer in the color gray on hand. Can I use that instead of Boysen Primeguard in white? Will I still be able to achieve the cooling effect of Boysen Cool Shades?

My roof already has existing paint. I plan on having it sanded first, then the Epoxy Primer, and then the Cool Shades.

Thank you.

From,
Boysen User P

Hi, Boysen User P.

It is, indeed, very hot these days. The Philippine summer weather can be brutal. I can definitely see why you’re looking to enlist the help of Boysen Cool Shades for your home.

So you say your roof already has existing paint. If the existing paint is still in good condition, you won’t need the primer. All you need to do is sand the surface lightly, clean the surface to get rid of the sanding dust, and then apply two coats of Boysen Cool Shades.

However, if it does have rusting or spots where the bare metal is exposed, that’s a different story. If there’s rusting you’ll need to carry out rust treatment to get rid of all the rust first. You’ll find a step-by-step video tutorial for that here.

If the rust treatment exposes any bare metal, you’ll have to spot prime it before you apply the Cool Shades topcoat. The same goes for any spots with bare metal. Spot prime first, and then Cool Shades after.

And, to answer your question, yes, you can use Boysen Epoxy White as a primer and to spot prime. You will still get the reduced heat build-up and subsequent home cooling effects of Boysen Cool Shades.

Boysen engineers recommend Boysen Primeguard in white as a primer for Boysen Cool Shades as it has the highest chance of giving the best cooling effects. But, that’s not to say you’ll lose it when you use a different metal primer. The heat-reflecting pigments in Boysen Cool Shades will still be able to do their job even if you use Boysen Epoxy primer.

Good questions though. I hope your roof repaint turns out well and that Cool Shades gives you a bit of respite from this summer heat!
