Hi, Lettie.

What kind of paint should I use with our rusting long span roof and how do I repaint it? As far as I can tell, it’s not damaged and has no holes. It’s almost 15 years old and has never been repainted since installation.

Hope you can guide me on this. Thank you!

From,
Boysen User B

Hi as well, Boysen User B.

Let’s give your long span roof some much-needed love! Before anything else, you really do have to first make sure there aren’t any areas with holes. These must be filled before you start painting.

First, Deal with the Rusting

Once there aren’t any holes (or there weren’t any to begin with anyway), it’s time to deal with the rusting. With a steel brush and sandpaper, try to remove as much of the rust as you can. Then, with a rag, clean the area to remove dirt and sanding dust.

If there are remaining rusted areas, to those apply Boysen Metal Etching Solution with a brush. Wait for 10 to 15 minutes. After, take a rag and wipe where you applied the solution with thinner.

Immediately after the thinner dries, apply a metal primer, like Boysen Red Oxide Metal Primer, to the areas where you carried out rust treatment.

Next, Repaint

Now that you’ve dealt with the rust, you’re ready to repaint! Here are your options for Boysen roof paint products.
