A Boysen user asks for paint recommendations for wooden floors. What does Lettie have to say?

Hi, Lettie!

I need your advice. I want to know what type of paint I should use for an existing floor. It is made of marine plywood topped with vinyl floor tiles. It’s inside a two-story building.

I want to cover up the vinyl tiles with floor paint to create a new look. I found online about Boysen products that I can use, but which one is best for my floor?

Thank you for the response!

From,

Boysen User J

Dear Boysen User J,

Thank you for sending us your inquiry! Painting your floors can create a new look for your space, and we appreciate that you are interested in using Boysen products.

Unfortunately, let me point out first that Boysen does not have products for painting over vinyl floor tiles. Our floor coatings are designated for wood, metal or concrete surfaces. You would have to remove the vinyl tiles first before repainting your wooden floor.

It’s also best to remove any existing paint or varnish to sound surface. Scrape any loose or flaking paint, using a paint remover if possible. Once that’s complete, you can consider the following products to paint your floors.

Paints for Wood Floors

If you want a colored look, you can consider Boysen Epoxy Enamel which is a durable floor coating for interior use. Apply Boysen Epoxy Primer first before proceeding to paint using the color of your choice. Note that epoxy paints are applied using a two-component system where you have to mix the paint with its respective curing agent.

Stains and Clear Coats for Wood Floors

If you prefer wood textures, you can use Boysen Xyladecor as a stain. It has a selection of tones that will beautify and show off the natural grain of wood, as well as provide wood preservation and water-repelling properties.

Once the stain has properly cured, be sure to follow up with Hudson Timbercoat as a topcoat. It is a premium clear coat choice for wood floors, providing excellent abrasion- and chemical-resistance. It is also a single-component product, meaning it acts as both sealer and topcoat, and doesn’t require any complicated mixing with curing agents. Its a water-based coating, making it low-odor despite its polyurethane-based formulation.

Choose a paint system that enables your preferred style for your wooden floors. Both paint systems that I’ve suggested are formulated for foot traffic, so you would benefit from those coatings for a long time.

I hope these suggestions answer your question. If you still need clarification, you can directly speak with our technical specialists. Good luck with your project, Boysen User J!
