We recently covered this 2026 trend called color capping, which designers say is a must-try, because it’s going to give your home interiors that much-coveted, layered, polished look.
Color capping is a tonal painting method that uses a color family to create that monochromatic look that can create richness and drama especially if the shades are not too close to each other.
Choose the Color Family
When choosing the colors you want for a room, it is easy to choose three tones—light, mid, and dark. For a layered tonal effect, here’s where to paint the colors you’ve chosen:
Light color – on your walls
Mid-tones – on the trim and woodwork
Dark color – on the ceiling

Why is it so important to check the colors you’ve chosen before buying? Despite the convenience of digital color swatches, you need to check the physical color swatches and Colorbooks because digital resolution and reproduction may not show the real paint colors due to different device settings and calibrations.
Why the 3 Color Tones?
Having the darkest color in the gradient painted on the ceiling creates drama and architectural interest in a room, as well as brings in a cozy and intimate atmosphere. The dark color creates the visual cap, which is where this phrase “color capping” comes from.
The mid-tone hue which is painted on a crown molding or cornice acts as a “bridge” between the dark ceiling and light wall. The shift between colors looks more gradual and smoother. If you don’t have these architectural features in place, you can always create a border by painting a horizontal band that stops at about 30 to 40 cm below the ceiling. Echo the mid-tone color on trim and woodwork like baseboards and door frames.
The lightest color that you’ve chosen goes on the walls of the room.
If you’re a bit anxious about how it would look, go for light neutrals like earth colors—dark and light—and mushroom colors to get that elegant and timeless look. These colors work beautifully because they have so many variations so color shifts can flow smoothly.
Tip: Make sure you choose colors that are in the same color family and that have the same undertone. Choose tones that are not too far apart so that transitions between colors don’t look jarring. However, don’t choose tones that are too similar either so that the effect can still be seen.
Choosing the Correct Boysen Product

The main reason for choosing a certain paint is to make sure that it will work well with your substrate, i.e., concrete, wood, metal, or drywall.
But there are other different considerations that are needed for each surface, which different paint finishes provide. For example:
- walls need a durable, easy-to-clean paint that can also hide surface imperfections
- trims and doors need an even more durable product because they experience heavy physical contact and friction
- ceilings need paint that best hides surface flaws and absorbs light thereby reducing glare.
Color capping is a wonderful way to update your home. Once you’ve chosen your three colors, buy a 200 mL can for each of them so that you can sample the colors in the room that you’ve chosen for color capping. Live with the paint sample patches for a day or two. This may be an additional step but it will test whether reality lives up to your imagination.
