For the metal series of Boysen PinTanong Videoserye, we’ve already painted new G.I. sheets and repainted roofs. Now, we’re repainting metal stairs. As always, Engineer Kim from the Boysen Technical Service Department walks you through the step-by-step process.
How to Repaint Metal Stairs
When painting surfaces that will see some foot traffic such as metal stairs, it’s best to go for epoxy paint products as these are specifically manufactured for the purpose. The metal stairs in this PinTanong episode already has a coating of epoxy paint but, since the paint is old, it will need a retouch.
For this project, we’ll be using Boysen Acqua Epoxy as topcoat, a 2-component paint. For more detailed instructions, especially on how to use 2-component paints, make sure to watch the video tutorial above.
Note: Always check the compatibility of the existing paint on the surface and the new paint product you plan on using to avoid paint incompatibility. Learn about it here.
Step 1:
Check if the current coating is still in good condition. Paint problems, such as peeling and chalking, must not be present. If you see any rusting, carry out rust treatment before proceeding to the next step.
Step 2:
Sand the entirety of the surface.
Step 3:
With a clean rag or brush, remove any dirt and sanding dust on the surface.
Step 4:
If there are areas where the bare metal is exposed, spot prime these with Boysen Epoxy Primer. Let dry.
Step 5:
Apply 2 coats of Boysen Acqua Epoxy. Wait 7 days before walking on the new coating.
Boysen Acqua Epoxy for Metal Surfaces and Concrete Floors
You need a highly durable paint product if you’re painting a surface that’s going to be stepped on and walked over. That’s when you go for epoxy paints. Epoxy makes the paint extra durable and tough which is why they’re often used for concrete and metal floors.
Boysen’s epoxy paints, like Boysen Acqua Epoxy, are ideal for concrete and metal surfaces. Use it if you want to paint concrete flooring, such as for home garages and basketball courts, or if you want long-lasting paint for your metal surfaces such as stairs, gates, trusses, and trellises.
Boysen Acqua Epoxy can be used for both interiors and exteriors, and comes in a variety of readily available colors. Because it’s water-based, it’s low odor as well. Like other epoxy paints, again, keep in mind that Boysen Aqua Epoxy is a 2-component paint. See what that entails here.
